Job Summary
The Weekend Farm Lead is responsible for assisting farm management by coordinating the work for the farm crew, performing all organic farming related tasks required to grow a wide variety of medicinal herbs and plants, and keeping accurate records of all activities as required. This position is designed to provide support and guidance for the farm crew on the weekends. This position is a seasonal role from March – December. The following duties are performed in a safe and timely manner, thereby contributing to the overall successful operation and growth of the organization.
Key Responsibilities
- Drive optimal farm productivity by actively working across all areas of operation as directed, including propagation, planting, soil and seed flat preparation, fertilizing, transplanting, irrigation, weeding, and crop harvesting.
- Lead and direct farm crew members to ensure efficient daily operations, productivity goals, and high-quality work standards are met.
- Promote and maintain safe equipment operation practices, including tractor use, and train team members on safety procedures and hazard awareness when working near machinery.
- Support strong harvest yields by following established harvesting and processing procedures, including picking, separating, cleaning, drying, and evaluating herb quality standards.
- Collaborate with crew members to ensure proper post-harvest handling, storage, and timely delivery of harvested crops.
- Maintain accurate and organized records of assigned farming activities, including planting, production, harvest, and delivery logs.
- Train and onboard new farm team members, providing hands-on instruction and safety training as needed.
- Monitor crops for signs of disease, pests, or other issues and communicate concerns promptly to leadership.
- Assist with installation, maintenance, and adjustment of irrigation systems, including valves, piping, and sprinkler heads.
- Provide transportation support for workers to stores and other necessary public locations, as needed.
- Serve as a Spanish-language resource to support communication, training, and collaboration with farm crew members.
Other Duties/Requirements
- Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions accurately and consistently.
- Works effectively both independently and in a team environment with minimal supervision.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to proactively identify, troubleshoot, and resolve issues.
- Provides reliable backup support to the farm crew and supervisor as needed.
- Willing and able to travel weekly to run errands, transport crew members, and make deliveries as assigned.
- Actively participates in team meetings, contributing ideas that support continuous process and operational improvement.
- Proficient in the safe and efficient use of hand tools and small power tools, including following operating instructions, completing required training, and maintaining proper tool storage.
- Promotes and maintains a safe work environment by consistently following safety protocols, completing required training, and remaining alert to potential hazards.
Required Education and Experience
- Associate’s degree in agriculture, horticulture, soil science or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience
- 3 years/seasons of related hands-on farming experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Baseline ability to speak and understand Spanish (fluency highly preferred)
- Familiarity with the cultivation of medicinal plants preferred
- Experience with tractors and other farm equipment highly preferred
Working Conditions
- Work Environment: Primarily outdoors, working in all weather conditions
- Travel Requirements: 25%
- Physical Demands: This job requires some lifting of 50 lbs. or less.
