What are the responsibilities and job description for the Visual Artist-in-Residence (Contract Position) position at Hennepin Healthcare?
Hennepin Healthcare – Inspire Arts Program
Position Overview
Hennepin Healthcare’s Inspire Arts Program is seeking a part‑time, contracted Artist‑in‑Residence to create meaningful visual art experiences with patients in our Pediatrics and Palliative Care units. This role centers on using art as a supportive intervention, offering positive distraction, reducing stress, and helping patients tap into their own creativity during hospitalization.
The Artist‑in‑Residence works directly with children, teens, and adults at the bedside, adapting to each patient’s interests, abilities, and energy level. Rather than following a set curriculum, the artist brings flexibility, presence, and compassion to each interaction.
The role includes leading monthly drop‑in art workshops for employees and, at times, facilitating collaborative art projects or workshops with hospital departments. The Artist‑in‑Residence also contributes to other Inspire Arts initiatives when support is needed.
Qualifications & Experience
Candidates must have:
· At least two years of experience teaching art to children and adolescents
· An active studio practice and ongoing engagement in their own creative work
· Ability to lead activities in multiple practical, bedside‑friendly mediums (e.g.,
drawing, painting, ‘zines, printmaking)
· Comfort working with children and adults of diverse backgrounds, with sensitivity to
cultural values and gender differences
· A considerate, compassionate approach and strong interpersonal skills
· Ability to work independently with solid time‑management and organizational skills
· Flexibility, a positive outlook, and a genuine heart for this work
Bilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
