Position Summary
The Director of Nursing (DON) is a licensed nurse responsible for overseeing all nursing services within the Assisted Living community. The DON ensures the health, safety, and well-being of residents through clinical oversight, staff training, regulatory compliance, and coordination of care in accordance with Idaho Regulations (IDAPA 16.03.22) and facility policies and procedures.
The DON provides assessment, delegation, and supervision of nursing tasks and ensures residents receive appropriate care based on their individual needs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Oversight
- Conduct initial, quarterly, and change-of-condition nursing assessments for residents
- Monitor resident health status, including resident physical and mental condition
- Review physicians’ orders, medications, and medical treatments for accuracy and compliance
- Ensure appropriate follow-up with physicians and outside agency providers
- Identify and respond to changes in resident conditions
Care Planning and Service Coordination
- Participate in development and review of the resident’s Negotiated Service Agreement (NSA)
- Ensure Care Plans reflect resident needs and are properly implemented
- Coordinate care with physicians, pharmacies, hospice, and home health agencies
- Ensure continuity of care and appropriate service delivery
Medication Management
- Oversee Medication Systems (blister packs, medi-sets etc…)
- Monitor for medication errors, side effects and interactions
- Ensure proper storage, documentation, and disposal of medications
- Provide oversight for PRN medication use and documentation
Nurse Delegation
- Delegate nursing tasks to unlicensed staff in accordance with Idaho Board of Nursing rules
- Train and validate competency of staff performing delegated tasks
- Supervise medication aides (med passers) and caregiver
- Provide ongoing clinical guidance and support to staff
Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with Idaho Assisted Living regulations (IDAPA)
- Maintain accurate and complete resident records
- Participate in surveys, audits, and inspections
- Ensure policies and procedures are followed and updated as needed
Infection Control & Safety
- Implement and monitor infection control practices
- Educate staff on universal precautions and disease prevention
- Monitor and respond to infectious disease concerns
- Ensure a safe environment for residents and staff
Staff Development
- Provide or coordinate clinical training for staff
- Ensure staff meet orientation and ongoing training requirements
- Educate staff on:
- Resident Care Needs
- Medication Assistance
- Emergency Procedures
- Abuse/Neglect Reporting
Incident Management
- Review and Investigate incidents, accidents, and complaints
- Ensure proper documentation and reporting
- Implement corrective actions and preventative measures
- Monitor trends and provide recommendations for improvement
Communication
- Communicate effectively with residents, resident families, physicians and staff
- Provide education and updates regarding resident care
- Participate in resident Care Conferences as needed
Pay: $93,000.00 - $100,000.00 per year
