Job Summary:
We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Quality Engineering Intern to support our Quality Assurance and Continuous Improvement teams. This internship provides hands-on experience in a high-precision manufacturing environment and offers valuable exposure to ISO documentation, inspection techniques, and lean methodologies.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Assist in the creation, revision, and management of ISO 9001 and/or ISO 13485 documentation, including standard operating procedures, work instructions, and quality forms.
- Perform Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (Gage R&R) studies to evaluate the consistency and reliability of measurement systems.
- Support cycle time reviews to identify process inefficiencies and improvement opportunities.
- Conduct part inspections using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) and other metrology tools to ensure products meet dimensional and cosmetic specifications.
- Participate in Value Stream Mapping (VSM) sessions to analyze and document current-state processes and identify areas for waste reduction.
- Assist Quality Engineers in root cause analysis, corrective actions, and continuous improvement projects.
- Support general quality engineering activities and other projects as assigned, including data collection, analysis, and report preparation.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Basic understanding of measurement and inspection equipment; CMM experience is a plus.
- Strong attention to detail and analytical skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint); Minitab or CAD a plus.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in cross-functional teams.
- Willingness to learn and contribute in a hands-on environment.
Education and Experience:
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related field
- Familiarity with ISO standards, Lean Manufacturing, or Six Sigma concepts preferred
- Prior exposure to quality systems or a manufacturing environment is a plus
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, feel/reach with hands/arms, and talk to hear.
The employee frequently is required to sit and walk. The employee is occasionally required to bend and stop, push and pull, reach above shoulder level, kneel, squat, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job to include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to moving mechanical parts and fumes or airborne particles. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Qualifications:Area Responsibilities:
R&D
- Supporting R&D by working with lab engineers and technicians to test and analyze performance characteristics of hydraulic screw in cartridge valves.
- Prepare hardware for testing
- Running tests at the test stand
- Performing analysis on the data after the test
- Discuss potential improvements to valves, test setups, etc.
CVT (Cartridge Valve Technology) Design
- Supporting CVT Engineering by working with Sun colleagues to assist in valve development and design work
- Model valve geometry in Creo
- Perform analysis on valve characteristics
- Create drawings to manufacture components
- Troubleshoot problems with manufacturing, assembly, test, or field failures of existing valves.
Manufacturing Engineer
- Supporting manufacturing operations by process improvement, fixture and jig design, and overall operational improvement tasks related to the manufacturing floor.
- Perform time studies and measurement data collection to aid in process capability and process improvements
- Designing fixtures, jigs or workstations to make operator tasks more ergonomically friendly
- Working alongside product engineering to troubleshoot problems with failures at end of line test and assist in improvements in First Pass Yield
- Creating work instructions to outline the correct way to perform manufacturing related tasks
