The Greens Creek Mine, located on Admiralty Island 18 miles south of Juneau, is an underground polymetallic mine operating since 1989, employing approximately 530 people. Here’s what you can expect in this role: 


  • You'll receive department-level training that not only covers job-specific tasks but also prioritizes safety protocols. Additionally, you will attend comprehensive MSHA training, ensuring you're equipped with essential safety knowledge before visiting our mine site located on Admiralty Island outside of Juneau.
  • Your role will revolve around offering your technical expertise and guidance in various accounting functions, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
  • You'll work extensively on preparing monthly production, inventory, and sales reports for submission to Hecla Corporate, ensuring reports are accurate and submitted on time.
  • You will critically review our in-place accounting processes, aiming to optimize process design for efficiency and effectiveness.
  • You'll regularly review and provide feedback and approval on cost reports, variance analysis, and other financial documents, ensuring accuracy and compliance with internal control requirements.
  • You will work extensively with our Marketing Manager on the sale and shipping logistics of our concentrate, specifically focusing on invoice preparation & collections, revenue recognition and all functions necessary to support shipment settlement.
  • In this role, you'll not only contribute to the financial integrity of HGCMC but also play a pivotal role in promoting a culture of safety and teamwork.


POSITION SUMMARY


The Sales Accountant is a key role within the Greens Creek finance group. The job gives a broad exposure to all of Greens Creek’s business activities. The primary function of the position is to manage sales for Gravity, Silver, Zinc & Precious metals concentrate and the external and internal financial reporting within HGCMC’s internal control requirements.

  • Complying with all necessary requirements put in place to prevent incidents, injuries or losses 
  • Ensuring the safety and health of themselves and others in the workplace by being responsible for their actions and taking due care while performing their work 
  • Identifying, eliminating, and reporting hazards as soon as practicable 
  • Reporting incidents and accidents as soon as practicable 
  • Disclosing all information regarding incidents and cooperating in incident investigations 
  • Assisting in the resolution of health and safety matters in a positive and timely manner 
  • Using and maintaining personal, protective equipment (PPE) 
  • Providing suggestions for improving work processes 
  • Assisting management by supporting change to achieve desired targets 
  • Ensuring that plant and equipment operate within their safe working limits 
  • Ensuring that correct equipment is used for the job 
  • Participating in risk assessment methodology 
  • Participating in safety initiatives 
  • Receiving training and instruction as required 
  • Maintaining good housekeeping standards


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Preparation of monthly production, inventory & sales reports for submission to Hecla Corporate.
  • Assists with internal and external audit engagement teams regarding implementation of remediation plans to address issues identified.
  • Ensures HGCMC accounting transactions comply with the company’s internal control requirements.
  • Maintains sales contracts sub-directory.
  • Coordinates vessels and maintain supporting documentation for each shipment.
  • Manage sales for gravity, silver, zinc, & precious metals concentrate.
  • Coordinate Assay exchange, settlement & corresponding QA/QC program with lab manager.
  • Prepare cash receipts & forecasting.
  • Maintain pricing & freight index models.
  • Appoint & manage discharge representatives.
  • Assist with budgets and forecasts.
  • Assume other responsibilities and tasks as needed.


QUALIFICATIONS
 Education and/or Experience

B.A. in accounting or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience. 


Experience

Two to five years of experience in accounting, preferably in the mining industry. 

 

Training/ Special Skills

Word processing, spreadsheet and database proficiency (MS Word, MS Excel & MS Access/SQL preferred); Ellipse or IFS Cloud accounting experience a plus.

  • Knowledge of developing technology, preferably specific knowledge of the mineral/metals business.

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to employees of the organization.


Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.


Reasoning Abilities

Good decision-making skills, working with limited oversight based on conceptual end goals.

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to deal with ambiguity, incomplete information. Ability to prioritize based on conflicting criteria.


Other Qualifications

Must complete MSHA 40-hour training or provide 5000-23 documentation of completed training.

Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.

While performing the duties of this job, employees may be frequently required to stand, walk, or sit for extended periods of time; use hand and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb and balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee must be able to talk and hear.

  • Have clarity of vision while operating machinery, reading gauges, and placing tools
  • Have clarity of vision for distances while navigating within the mine and access roads efficiently and safely
  • Able to adjust varying points of reference while safely navigating the terrain, maintaining awareness of traffic, and operating tools and machinery
  • Able to identify vehicles, machinery, and people in peripheral vision


Speaking - Occasional:

  • Able to clearly communicate with co-workers and supervisors on the radio and in person


Hearing - Occasional:

  • Must wear hearing protection while working in the mine


Work Environment & Job Schedule
At times the employee is required to commute out and back on the daily ferry to the mine site. May be occasionally exposed to underground work environments; outside weather conditions, wet and/or humid conditions; extreme cold, extreme heat, potentially hazardous wildlife; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals; risk of electrical shock; explosives and vibration. The noise level in most work environments is usually very loud. This position may occasionally require work on nights or weekends, but will typically work Monday through Friday, in the Vintage Office, with 5 days on 2 days off schedule.
