Position Title: Project Engineer
Reports To: Senior Project Engineer / Director, Capital Projects
Location: Coeur d'Alene, ID, must be able to travel to site domestically and internationally up to 25-50% of working hours

Purpose:
As part of the Operations Group, the Projects Engineer plays a critical role in ensuring Hecla's capital investments across its multi-mine portfolio are well-justified, rigorously scoped, and effectively executed. This is a non-operational corporate role that provides oversight, advisory services, and analytical support to site operations teams and senior leadership on capital planning and project delivery.
Position Summary:
Hecla Mining is in an active growth phase, with capital projects underway and planned across multiple operating sites in North America. The Project Engineer will contribute directly to how the company plans, tracks, and delivers capital investments, from budget preparation through stage gate review and post-investment evaluation.
The ideal candidate is an early-career engineer with a strong technical foundation and a desire to grow within a corporate project management function. They are detail-oriented, take initiative, and are comfortable working across disciplines and with site teams in a support capacity.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Capital Budget Support: Assist with the review and compilation of annual mine capital budgets and Long-Range Plan estimates. Help confirm supporting data is complete and flag gaps in project justification or scope definition.
- Stage Gate Administration: Support the corporate stage gate process by tracking project milestones, maintaining status logs, and preparing structured progress reports for senior leadership on cost, schedule, and scope adherence.
- Engineering Studies: Assist with conceptual and preliminary engineering studies across mining, civil, mechanical, and electrical disciplines. Contribute to capital cost estimates and support development of project scopes and design criteria.
- Site Team Coordination: Serve as a coordination resource between the corporate projects team and mine site engineering staff. Help translate project objectives into defined scopes and deliverables and follow up on outstanding actions and commitments.
- Benchmarking and Tools: Maintain and update capital cost estimating tools, benchmarking datasets, and project tracking spreadsheets. Support continuous improvement of estimate quality and data integrity across the portfolio.
- Post-Investment Review: Assist with post-investment reviews (PIRs) of completed projects by gathering data, documenting outcomes versus objectives, and compiling lessons learned for future planning.
- Contractor and Vendor Support: Assist in developing scopes of work for consultants and contractors. Help track proposal evaluations, contract deliverables, and vendor performance against schedule and quality expectations.
Safety, Health & Environmental Responsibilities and Accountabilities:
Include, but are not limited to:
- Display due diligence in safety, health, and environmental matters and lead by example to ensure successful implementation of Safety & Health and Environmental Management Systems
- Promote open communication and cooperation across all operations
- Ensure that all personnel are informed of safety, health, and environmental issues related to tailings storage facilities (TSFs) and waste rock storage facilities (WRSFs)
- Participate in safety audits and inspections of TSFs and WRSFs, supporting site personnel in achieving desired outcomes
- Assist in the development of emergency preparedness frameworks for TSFs and WRSFs
- Participate in incident investigations related to tailings and waste rock management and ensure compliance with safety, health, and regulatory requirements
- Verify appropriate qualifications for personnel working on tailings facilities and contribute to environmental reporting
- Ensure project safety, health, and environmental considerations are properly integrated into project planning and execution
- Verify that contractors and consultants meet Hecla's safety, health, and environmental requirements
Education and Credentials:
- Bachelor's degree in Mining, Mechanical, Civil, or Electrical Engineering desired.
- 3–5 years of experience in capital project planning, design, or execution in heavy industry; mining experience preferred.
- EIT certification or progress toward P.E. or P.Eng. designation is a plus.
Skills and Knowledge:
- Working knowledge of engineering fundamentals across at least one primary discipline (mining, civil, mechanical, or electrical), with developing familiarity in adjacent areas relevant to heavy industry projects.
- Understanding of capital project development concepts, including scope definition, cost estimating classes, and the owner's perspective on project delivery.
- Ability to assist with Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling; exposure to project scheduling software or methodology is a plus.
- Basic proficiency with Earned Value Analysis (EVA) or other project performance measurement concepts.
- Strong spreadsheet and data management skills; comfortable building and maintaining financial tracking tools and estimate models.
- Exposure to contract structures and scopes of work for third-party vendors, consultants, and contractors.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills; able to prepare organized technical summaries and status reports.
- Some proficiency in Spanish and/or French is beneficial given Hecla's operating footprint.
- Commitment to safety and environmental management principles.
Working Conditions:
- Ideally, this is a corporate office-based role located in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho but alternate arrangements will be considered for the right candidate
- Comfortable with periodic domestic and international travel to mine sites and project locations on a flexible schedule; some travel to remote locations is required.
- Able to work effectively across multiple time zones and with multicultural teams.
About the Team:
The Operations Group consists of Hecla's operating mines — Greens Creek (Alaska), Lucky Friday (Idaho), and Keno Hill (Yukon), as well as corporate growth initiatives. This role joins a small, high-impact team and reports directly to Director, Capital Projects. The position interacts regularly with mine GMs, site engineering leads, site PM’s and senior corporate leadership including the VP of Operations and COO.
