Heart House is an education non-profit that serves refugee, immigrant, and under-resourced children with a holistic out-of-school and summer program, utilizing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) to help them thrive in their new community. We’re located in the same Vickery Meadow area as many of these families, offering a safe space for kids to learn, gain new experiences, and grow. We’re dedicated to meeting the academic and emotional needs of refugee and immigrant children, because every child deserves a chance to reach their full potential.

The mission of Heart House is to empower refugee, immigrant, and under-resourced children in Vickery Meadow by providing enhanced opportunities for educational equity through literacy and social-emotional learning.

The AmeriCorps Associate will play a vital role in supporting the Reading Homeroom program and Program Manager, providing essential reading intervention tutoring services to emergent bilingual refugee and immigrant students. The role involves assisting with student enrollment, conducting reading assessments, supporting tutors with intervention lesson plans, coordinating with volunteers, and ensuring the effective delivery of reading programs during the school day, occasional Saturday school days, and events if make up hours are needed.

Key Responsibilities include:

Program Support:

  • Assist Program Manager with the daily operations of the Reading Homeroom program.
  • Help manage and coordinate schedules for in-school and Saturday school programs.

Student Engagement and Support:

  • Assist in identifying and enrolling students needing reading intervention.
  • Help pair students with consistent tutors for the duration of the program.
  • Monitor and track student progress using the phonics screener and other tools.
  • Support the specific needs of students, including those with 504 plans, dyslexia, or trauma histories.

Volunteer Coordination:

  • Assist in training and supporting volunteers from various sources, including student groups from local universities and high schools.
  • Ensure volunteers are paired effectively with students and provide necessary materials and guidance.
  • Maintain volunteer schedules and help manage attendance and tracking.

Communication and Collaboration:

  • Maintain positive relationships with school administration, teachers, and staff.
  • Communicate program schedules and updates weekly.
  • Coordinate with the school, district refugee services, and other relevant organizations to support newcomer students.

Program Evaluation and Improvement:

  • Collect and analyze data on student progress and program effectiveness.
  • Implement improvements based on feedback and data analysis.
  • Maintain detailed records and documentation for program activities and outcomes.

Events and Incentives:

  • Organize and manage end-of-year parties and other special events.
  • Develop and implement reward systems to motivate and encourage students.
  • Provide food and incentives for students during school and Saturday programs.

Required Qualifications:

  • At least 18 years old, high school diploma required, background check required.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Passion for serving diverse and underserved student populations.
  • Interest or background in education, reading intervention, or a related field.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Proficiency in Google Workspace and other relevant software.
  • Understanding of and commitment to social-emotional learning and trauma-informed care.

This location requires a total service commitment of 900 hours.

Benefits include
Living Allowance of $10,800.17; paid out biweekly ($568.43)

Education Award of $3,697.50; earned at the end of term.
