Job Overview

This is a union position.     

The Prototypes-HealthRight 360 Domestic Violence Resource Center is funded by the Department of Public Health and Department of Public Social Services to help survivors of domestic violence become self-sufficient. This position is part of a team that includes DV Case Managers and Therapists. The ideal candidate is trauma informed and experienced in domestic violence, poverty issues, and victims of crime.

The Lead Attorney is skilled in Family Law and will provide legal advice, representation, advocacy, and education to participants. This position will be responsible for oversight of all legal services implementation and documentation within their site.

         

Key Responsibilities

    

  • Provide legal advice in the areas of Family Law, Restraining Orders, Domestic Violence/Injunctions, Citizenship/Immigration Law (only U-Visas and VAWA petitions), Accessing Government Benefits and other legal assistance.
  • Handle all aspects of legal matters in Family Law cases, including preparing pleadings, negotiations, correspondence, mediation, and court representation (if needed).
  • Attend alternative dispute resolution or mediations set by the parties or the court.
  • Prepare U-Visas and VAWA petitions for qualified participants as related to the DV case.
  • Provide appropriate legal referrals to outside Council with more complex cases as assessed and as needed.
  • Advocate for clients with the Department of Children and Family Services cases.
  • Conduct intake, determine eligibility, open files, maintain written records and documentation.
  • Submit timely monthly billing reports.
  • Properly close all files with appropriate referrals in accordance with statues, codes, and local rules.
  • Customer Service: Treat participants with dignity and respect, take time to explain complex legal terms in common language, and practice law from a strength-based perspective.
  • Provide domestic violence legal services in collaboration within team of case managers and therapist.
  • Attend relevant County and local meetings, trainings, conferences, and community outreach events as needed.
  • Maintain a network of legal services resources and collaborative partners.
  • Quality Assurance: Responsible for ensuring compliance with DPSS statement of work and program requirements for legal services.

         

Education and Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

    

  • Required Education: Juris Doctorate degree and current license to practice law in the State of California.
  • Highly Preferred: 40-hour Domestic Violence Advocate Certification.
  • Preferred: Minimum 3 years’ experience in family law.
  • Dependable automobile, California Driver's License, and valid car insurance.
  • Required: Spanish bilingual.

In compliance with the California Department of Public Health's mandate, all employees must be able to provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination. Medical and religious exemptions are available.
