School Bus/Van Monitor

Job Summary: The Bus Monitor provides safe, courteous, and timely oversight of students on

school buses and vans. Assists students with boarding and disembarking from the vehicle and

maintains order on the bus while in transit. The bus monitor must work closely with the vehicle’s

driver to ensure safety.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Duties/Responsibilities:

• Assist with transporting students to and from school and school-related events
• Ensure students are properly seated, facing forward, and remain seated while the

bus is in motion

• Ensure students exit only at their assigned stops and are released to a parent or

guardian when required

• Maintain order on the school bus at all times
• Follow basic child safety practices at all times
• Build positive working relationships with bus drivers, school staff, parents, and

students

• Work with the driver to ensure no student is left on the bus after each route
• Use active listening skills to understand students, parents, and staff, and

communicate information clearly and effectively

• Follow all company and school district safety and security policies and procedures
• Report to work on time as scheduled
• Help ensure the safety of all students
• Complete disciplinary reports as needed
• Attend required safety and staff meetings
• Become familiar with the company’s timekeeping and route-tracking systems
• Assist students with properly fastening and wearing seat belts or child safety

restraints, when applicable.

• Assist with emergency evacuation procedures and drills, as required
• Immediately report accidents, injuries, unsafe conditions, or behavioral concerns to

the bus driver and/or Dispatch.

• Maintain confidentiality regarding students and families in accordance with company

and school district policies.

• Monitor student behavior and use appropriate behavior-management techniques

consistent with company and school district policies to maintain a safe environment.

• Execute routes as assigned
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Skills/Abilities:

• Ability to speak and understand basic English
• Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test
• Ability to pass a background check, CORI & SORI
• Knowledge of child behavior
• Familiarity with the needs of children enrolled in special education preferred
• Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately in emergency situations
• Ability to exercise sound judgment and maintain confidentiality

Education and Experience:

• Experience working with children preferred
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Must be 18 years of age or older

Physical Requirements:

• Sitting, standing, moving from one location to another, and frequently sitting for

prolonged periods

• Occasionally lifting objects up to 20 pounds
• Moving about to accomplish tasks
• Communicating with others to exchange information
• Daily exposure to outdoor elements such as wind, rain, snow, and low and high

temperatures

• Ability to enter and exit the school bus multiple times throughout the workday
• Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, and reach to assist students, when necessary
• Ability to walk the length of the bus to conduct required child checks at the end of

each route
