General Statement of Duties


Position serves as a designated attendance officer for assigned schools. Position enforces the provisions of the Code of Virginia compulsory attendance law in accordance with School Board policy and procedures. Position tracks student attendance referrals and monitors students' attendance. Position works as a team member to develop effective intervention strategies to eliminate barriers to regular school attendance, provides case management, enters SRC Attendance Coding, supports school VCSIP goals for attendance and makes timely referrals to the School Social Worker for students and/or parents who require court intervention.


This position is a 12 month 260 day. Minimum salary is $66,352.46 for the 2024-25SY (prorated based on hire date)


Essential Duties


  • Enforces and monitors Code of Virginia and School Board policy requirements of compulsory school attendance.
  • Maintains working knowledge of state law, school board policy, Virginia Department of Education policy and administrative regulations regarding school attendance matters.
  • Investigates reports of students not enrolled in school.
  • Schedules, develops, and implements Attendance Compliance Plans and School Conference meetings in accordance with timelines specified in the Code of Virginia and School Board Policy requirements.
  • Collaborates with school social workers and other school personnel to effectively support the timely filing of a CHINS petition or parent warrant when necessary.
  • Consults with administrators, school counselors, teachers, and other school personnel regarding student attendance.
  • Conducts home visits with parents and students for the purpose of checking on truant students and gaining parental support for students' compliance in attending school.
  • Maintains accurate records of truancy caseload.
  • Maintains documents, files and records for all work-related activities.
  • Engages with the community members to support students remaining in school.
  • Links students and families to community and school-based services as needed.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.




Minimum Qualifications


Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree in social work, behavioral science, criminal justice, or a related field preferred. Experience working with truancy reduction, dropout prevention and student attendance programs preferred. Ability to read and respond to communication, compose letters, and file accurate reports. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing and to work effectively with a diverse population of students, parents, school staff and community. Bilingual (English and Spanish speaking) is a plus. Must be willing to work a flexible work schedule. Possession of a valid Virginia driver's license required. Must be willing and able to use personal vehicle as needed to make home visits and meet with stakeholders outside of the school as needed.


Additional Information


Ability to provide direct intervention service to high-risk students. Shall be able to use computers, software, and other current technology. Work requires frequent standing, sitting, walking and light lifting up to 10 pounds. Effective verbal and written communication skills for expressing or exchanging ideas, hearing to perceive information at a normal spoken word level and visual acuity for preparing and analyzing written or computer data.
