Interested in providing campus safety to a Community College? SVCC is seeking a Officer, to protect life and property and provide service to the students, faculty staff, and visitors at Southside Virginia Community College. Officers are expected to enforce all applicable federal, state, local laws and ordinances as well as the policies of Southside Virginia Community College. Enforcement should be tempered with appropriate officer discretion. Officers should serve as positive role models to their community. Officers will render assistance in emergency and non-emergency situations as appropriate, including referral to other agencies when the police department does not, cannot provide the requested service.
Some of the duties include, but are not limited to:
Provide protection of life and property on the campus
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

Enforcement should be tempered with appropriate officer discretion. Officers should serve as positive role models to their community. Officers will render assistance in emergency and non-emergency situations as appropriate, including referral to other agencies when the police department does not, cannot provide the requested service.
Some of the duties include, but are not limited to:
Provide protection of life and property on the campus
- Conducting routine patrols on foot, or by vehicle to deter crime
- Conducting security checks of buildings, parking lots, and campus facilities
- Responding to emergency situations, including medical incidents, accidents, and fires
- Coordinating with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency responders during crises
- Providing escorts for students, faculty, or staff upon request
- Responding to and investigating reports of criminal activity, disturbances, or suspicious behavior
- Conducting safety training, such as active shooter drills, self-defense classes, or alcohol awareness programs
- Providing first aid or CPR until emergency medical services arrive
- Implementing emergency response protocols, such as lockdowns or evacuations
- Participating in threat assessments to identify potential risks to campus safety
- Engagement with the community to build relationships with students, faculty, and staff to promote trust and cooperation
- Issuing summons and affecting arrests when required
- Enforcing traffic and parking regulations
- Conducting interviews and gathering evidence in cases of criminal activity or policy violations
- Enforcing college Laws /policies related to drugs, alcohol, weapons, and conduct
- Assisting with conflict resolution
- Documenting incidents, arrests, and investigations through detailed reports
- Investigate criminal activities on campus, such as thefts, assaults, or drug-related offenses
- Gather evidence and process property as described under Virginia Law
- Assist with crowd control during campus sporting events, concerts, protest, and graduation.
- Provide coverage after hours at the need of the college

KSA's/Required Qualifications
- Applicant must have a high school diploma or equivalent
- Must be a certified law enforcement Officer in the State of Virginia
- Must have a valid driver’s license
- Obtain and maintain certification in CPR and First Aid
- Must be 21 years of age and a U.S. Citizen
- Must have excellent communication skills with an ability to interface with all people of the campus community
- Must have well-developed analytical skills, solid judgment and good decision- making skills
- Officers should be able to make critical decisions under stress
- Officers must be physically fit enough to perform required duties
- Officers should have good mediation skills and the ability to defuse conflict
- Officers must be sensitive to victims and witnesses of crime
- Officers must be able to qualify with a departmental issued weapon as a condition of employment
- Experience working with racially, economically and age-diverse individuals
- Certified firearms instructor
- Certified in C.I.T (Crisis Intervention Training) / Mental Health First Aid
- Experience in investigations, and crime prevention
- Prior employment with a campus law enforcement agency
