What are the responsibilities and job description for the Business Development & Sales Manager – Rail & Diesel Power Systems position at Hays?
Your new company
A well‑established international engineering business with a strong European heritage is expanding its presence across North America. The company specializes in high‑performance rotating equipment and electrical systems, supplying critical components into rail, marine, and industrial power applications.
With an established global reputation and a growing US footprint, the business is now entering a new phase of commercial growth, with a clear focus on expanding its reach across the North American rail and heavy industrial markets.
Your new role
As Business Development & Sales Manager, you will play a key role in driving new business growth across North America, with a particular focus on rail, locomotive, and diesel‑driven power applications.
This is a hands‑on, externally focused role, where success is built on developing relationships, identifying opportunities, and winning complex, project‑based sales.
You will:
- Drive new business development across rail, locomotive, and industrial OEM markets
- Build relationships with locomotive manufacturers, refurbishment providers, and heavy equipment OEMs
- Develop and grow key customer accounts while identifying new revenue opportunities
- Manage the full sales cycle, from early engagement through to contract negotiation and award
- Act as the commercial interface between North American customers and European engineering teams
- Support opportunities in new build, retrofit, and refurbishment projects
- Represent the business at customer meetings, industry events, and trade shows
The role operates within a long‑cycle, solution‑driven sales environment, where deals are complex and require both commercial acumen and technical credibility.
What you will need to succeed
You will bring a proven background in business development or technical sales within industrial or engineering environments, with the ability to operate effectively in a customer‑focused, project‑based sales environment.
You are likely to come from one of the following backgrounds:
- Diesel engine / power systems manufacturers (e.g. Caterpillar, Cummins, MTU / Rolls‑Royce)
- Rail / rolling stock / locomotive organizations (e.g. Siemens, Wabtec, Alstom)
- Industrial power, rotating equipment, or engineered product businesses
In addition, you will have:
- Experience selling complex, engineered or bespoke solutions
- The ability to build relationships with both technical and commercial stakeholders
- An understanding of long sales cycles (typically 6–12 months)
- A hands‑on, self‑starting approach, comfortable operating autonomously
- A level of technical credibility within power systems or mechanical/electrical equipment
You do not need to be an engineer, but you must be comfortable operating in a technical, solution‑led sales environment.
What you will get in return
This is an opportunity to join a specialist engineering business with strong global capabilities and play a key role in shaping its North American growth strategy. You will benefit from a high level of autonomy, direct exposure to international teams, and involvement in complex, high‑value projects, along with a competitive base salary and performance‑based bonus structure. As the business continues to grow, there is genuine scope for career progression and increased responsibility.
