Description

GENERAL SUMMARY:

Under limited supervision, prepares meals, and estimates the quantities of food and ingredients necessary to meet the hospital’s dietary demands. Is responsible for preparing, cooking and serving a wide variety of foods, including many types of special diets. Takes responsibility for sanitation, hygiene and cleanliness of the food preparation areas. Adheres to the mission, values and standards of excellence of Hawarden Regional Healthcare in all aspects of job performance.

 

 

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES:

1.

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with Hawarden Regional Healthcare standards. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and regulations, the Compliance Accountability Program, Code of Ethics, and HRH policies and procedures, including all provisions of the Health Insurance Portability Act of 1996 (HIPAA). In order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical and professional behavior by implementing the organizational vision, values, and mission.

2.

Coordinates the proper preparation, cooking/serving, holding and storing of food for patients, staff, visitors and special functions. Ensures economical, safe and timely food service.

3.

Checks menu and prepares items using standardized recipes provided. Serves guest and/or employee meals.

4.

Checks and restocks supplies to ensure adequate food supply for following day. Maintains and monitors dietary temperature logs. Checks in and stores food deliveries and makes notations of supplies needed.

5.

Practices standard sanitation procedures to ensure proper handling of food products and equipment.

6.

Nutritional nourishments/snacks will be prepared and labeled, per diet sheet and h.s. (evening) snack list.

7.

Prepares menu items and makes modifications for special diet as outlined in the menu extensions or in the Diet Manual.

8.

Prepares individual patient trays and delivers to the nursing floor per food cart. Assists nursing in passing trays when needed.

9.

Cooks, chills, packages, wraps, dates and labels menu items for freezing or chilled holding. Checks and records temperature of food as required.

10.

Able to operate dish machine, stores clean dishware and monitor dish machine temperature.

11.

Washes/sanitizes equipment, carts, appliances, service ware, trays, etc. in accordance with established procedures and inspects all items for cleanliness. Performs cleaning assignments & maintains & monitors dietary cleaning logs.

12.

Responsible for cash register till and reconciling daily cash receipts.

13.

Recognizes and communicates issues/occurrences utilizing established lines of authority, and assists in identifying ways to resolve variances or unacceptable outcomes.

14.

Able to problem solve & maintain effective communication between departments and provide follow-up action as needed.

15.

Must have a general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.)

16.

Actively participates in departmental meetings, committees, conferences, and in services. Is knowledgeable of and complies with Safety and Infection Control Policies & Procedures. Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement activities as requested. Keeps up to date on new procedures and research. Maintains confidentiality of information pertaining to clients, physicians, employees and HRH business.

17.

Completes all mandatory training such as Healthstream, The Patient Experience, Safe Choices, Crucial Conversations and any other training as designated by Administration.

18.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. High school education or equivalent required.
  2. Previous experience in quantity food cooking preferred. On-the-job training will be given in food preparations, as well as in sanitation, hygiene, and diet manual guide study within six months of hire date.
  3. Must be accurate in following recipes and directions for special diet requirements.
  4. Must have a general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.)
  5. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals and values of Hawarden Regional Healthcare.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Must successfully pass pre-employment physical examination, drug screening, and must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives.
  2. Continuous standing, walking and bending.
  3. Frequent lifting of 10-15 lbs. Occasional lifting of 20 lbs. Rarely lifting of 35 lbs.
  4. Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to environmental elements, such as exposure to noise, chemical and/or chemical fumes, and infectious disease.
  5. Regular and physical attendance at work is an essential function of the job.
