GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, provides primary healthcare and performs approved medical services under the direction of a clinic physician. Adheres to the mission and values and standards of excellence of Hawarden Regional Healthcare in all aspects of job performance.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONAL COMPETENCIES: |

Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide service/care appropriate to the age of the patients served, in accordance with Hawarden Regional Healthcare standards. |

Performs health screening of clinic patients within the scope of medical ability. |
|
3. |
Provides direct patient care as defined by state licensure requirements. |
|
4. |
Performs patient physical exam, illicit medical history, record findings on progress notes, prepare and dictate discharge summaries for the physician-employer. |
|
5. |
Assesses, diagnoses, and treats medical and surgical problems and records the same for review by the supervising physician. |
|
6. |
Performs therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing, removal of foreign bodies, aspirations and other clinical procedures. |
|
7. |
Performs office surgical procedures such as skin biopsy, ingrown toenail removal, incision and drainage of abscesses, arthrocentesis and mole removal. |
|
8. |
Provides prenatal, postnatal, and obstetrical care as directed by the supervising physician. |
|
9. |
Cares for orthopedic problems such as strains, sprained dislocations and simple fractures. |
|
10. |
Performs and/or screens special medical tests such as electrocardiography, cardiac monitoring, radiography, audiometric and vision screening, tonometry, lumbar puncture, and pulmonary function tests. |
|
11. |
Instructs and counsels patients regarding physical and mental health on matters such as diets, disease, therapy, normal growth and development. |
|
12. |
Assists the supervising physician in the delivery of services to patients requiring continuing care in home, nursing facility or hospital. |
|
13. |
Refers patient to appropriate specialist as directed by supervising physician. |
|
14. |
Maintains awareness of community services, agencies, resources and health facilities. |
|
15. |
Assists in ordering and maintaining equipment, medications, and records of the practice. |
|
16. |
Provides immediate evaluation, treatment and institution of procedures essential to providing appropriate response to emergency medical problems. Prompt response requires pre-approved plan as per supervising physician. |
|
17. |
Admits patient to hospital or health care facility as directed by the supervising physician. |
|
18. |
Orders laboratory testing, radiographic procedures, diets, and inhalation therapy. Orders physical, occupational, or speech therapy and rehabilitation as patient condition warrants. |
|
19. |
Supplies properly packaged and labeled prescription drugs and/or controlled substances to the patient when pharmacy services are not reasonably available or when it is in the best interest of the patient, as directed by the supervising physician. |
|
20. |
Administers and/or orders medications within the guidelines established by state licensure agency. |
|
21. |
May, at the request of a proper authority, withdraw a specimen of blood from a patient for the purpose of determining blood alcohol or drug level (other medicolegal). |
|
22. |
Directs other medical personnel in the provision and execution of patient care. |
|
23. |
Directs and assists emergency personnel in the stabilization and transport of critically ill patients. |
|
24. |
Participates with the Sponsoring Physician in developing clinic protocols. |
|
25. |
Participates in the development and administration of patient education programs. |
|
26. |
Participates with the Physician and other staff in the development, execution and periodic review of the written policies governing the services the clinic furnishes. |
|
27. |
Is knowledgeable of and actively participates in improving patient safety and reducing risk to patients. Complies with Safety and Infection Control & Procedure. |
|

Actively participates in department meetings, committees, conferences, and in services. |
|
29. |
Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Mercy and Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, the Corporate Compliance Program, Code of Ethics, as well as other policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior. |

Qualifications
- National Certification and current license in State (Iowa/South Dakota) to practice as a Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner.
- One year of experience as a general Physician Assistant/Nurse Practitioner in a primary care setting preferred.
- Is able to communicate effectively with all members of the health care team.
- Is able to perform a variety of duties characterized by frequent change.
- Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) is required unless doctor's release is provided.
- May be requested to travel within the region. When assigned to travel, a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance will be submitted to manager prior to travel.
- Must have a general working knowledge of computers and department specific software (i.e. Healthstream, internet, etc.)
- Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment.
- Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Hawarden Regional Healthcare.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must successfully pass pre-employment physical examination, drug screening, and must adhere to applicable organizational requirements on an annual basis for Employee Health Directives.
- Must possess the ability to comply with Hawarden Regional Healthcare policies and procedures.
- Primarily works inside with frequent sitting, walking, standing and occasional lifting of patients in excess of 50 pounds.
- Ability to function under stressful situations.
- Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to environmental elements, such as inclement weather, dust, noise, chemicals and/or chemical fumes, and infectious disease.
