Description
In collaboration with the University community, develops and guides initiatives to support the learning, teaching, research, service, and administrative goals of the University. Coordinates and integrates learning services with leadership from other academic and functional areas such as the colleges, tutoring and testing, faculty instructional services, and Information Technology Services. Directs and supervises; maintains the Libraries and Learning Commons environment; plans for new or renovated facilities, and coordinates and establishes library and learning commons performance standards to provide efficient and effective learning services to the University. Anticipates future opportunities and obstacles and continually retools to meet challenges. Creates an environment that encourages and recognizes creativity, innovation, and openness to new ideas, and encourages input from others. Takes a leadership role in assessment and accreditation activities, in developing innovative services and integration of technology in library and related learning services.
Location: This on-site position is based at our Waterfront Plaza campus site and Library, in downtown Honolulu, but may require visits to the Learning Commons at Aloha Tower Marketplace.
Qualifications:
- Masters of Library Science degree from an American Library Association accredited institution or related field.
- Four years of progressive experience in academic administration, preferably within an academic library, learning commons, or teaching and learning center, including a broad background in management, administration, operations, and budgeting.
- Experience in personnel management/supervision, and budgeting.
- Demonstrated ability to foster cross-functional collaboration, particularly with deans, department heads, and other divisions.
- Knowledge of and experience with outcomes and assessment of library services and accreditation processes.
- PhD in content field.
- Expertise in utilizing current information technologies such as automated library systems, Internet, Intranet, and social networking.
- Knowledge of information, media, and technology literacies, electronic information resources; library functions, consortia, and copyright policy.
- Demonstrated ability to foster and manage change in a fast-paced environment.
- Experience in strategic planning, designing learning spaces, and applying emerging and academic technologies that support the teaching and learning process on campus and online.
- Report to work obligations to support the department and may require work during HPU’s winter break, if necessary.
- Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
- Able to work all shifts and extended hours.
- Upon hire, candidate must have reliable personal transportation to facilitate travel between to all HPU worksites and other locations as required by the position. This includes a valid driver’s license and a personal vehicle that is legally registered and insured.
- Due to driving responsibilities, you must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with HPU’s Vehicle Driving policy.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
- Provide vision, leadership, and accountability through strategic planning and assessment, policy development and implementation, budget preparation and administration, integration of appropriate technology, personnel management, and consortia collaboration.
- Develop and administer the University Libraries and Learning Commons budgets.
- Articulate and implement a vision for the University Library and Learning Commons through collaboration with colleges, departments, and other divisions regarding ways to incorporate library and learning commons services into effective education experiences for students and embed information, media, and technology literacy learning outcomes into curricula, courses, and assignments.
- Provide leadership for the growth of the University Libraries and Learning Commons; develop library-based information systems and services, promote innovation, and plan for future integration of new systems and programs.
- Plan for physical space needs and initiate changes to accomplish the University’s goals and objectives.
- In collaboration with campus partners, provide opportunities for faculty and staff professional development.
- Collect and analyze data to improve instruction and learning services.
- Develop and maintain a collection of resources aligned with areas of research and the curriculum, the learners, and the teachings styles and instructional strategies used within the school community.
- Cooperate and network with other libraries, librarians, and agencies to provide access to resources outside the University.
- Oversee development of initiatives that support the learning, teaching, research, service, and administrative goals of the University.
- Provide 24/7 access to library services. Understand copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property, and assist others in gaining understanding and observance of the same.
- Establish staff review performance standards and requirements, equitable recognition and incentives for employee performance, and ensure supervisor accountability.
- Determine ideal staffing level for each unit, adjust personnel levels to appropriate numbers, and recommend and initiate position transfers to meet Library and Learning Commons needs.
- Oversee professional development programs to enhance job effectiveness and implement continuous planning to develop new tools and training to foster and enhance job effectiveness.
- Actively participates as an effective member of team by completing assigned duties, accepting additional assignments or reassignments.
- Assists with seasonal peaks.
