What are the responsibilities and job description for the Deputy General Counsel position at Hawaii Pacific University?

Job Summary:
The Deputy General Counsel, under the Senior Vice President, General Counsel, and Board Secretary (“General Counsel”), provides professional support to members of the President’s senior staff and other University stakeholders in a variety of technical and legal areas, activities, and special projects. Provides technical assistance with respect to federal, state, municipal and university regulations and policies. The Deputy General Counsel will be responsible for the management and supervision of the Office of University Counsel in the General Counsel's absence.

Compensation:
$200,000 - $225,000 per year
Commensurate with experience, skills, and qualifications.
This is a full-time, exempt, on-site, staff position. Located in downtown Honolulu at Harbor Court.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor Degree from an ABA accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice in the State of Hawaii (or acquisition of Active license to practice in the State of Hawaii within one year of hire).
  • Minimum 6 years of experience practicing law in a law firm, government, or corporate setting.
  • Experience and ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast paced, team-oriented environment against time sensitive deadlines.
  • Proven organizational skills and a record of accomplishment in dealing with complex issues through analysis; the ability to innovate solutions to legal issues in support of strategic objectives; excellent judgment; business acumen; and common sense.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience working with a Board of Trustees or Board of Directors and advising on corporate governance matters.
  • Demonstrated success in managing and motivating staff to consistently deliver superior outcomes in a service oriented environment.
  • Building professional relationships both internally and externally to achieve demonstrated success in specific outcomes in a productive and professional manner.
  • Able to work with highly confidential information with professionalism and utmost discretion.
  • Ability to write and speak with clarity and accuracy, and proven ability to work collaboratively and harmoniously with a wide variety of people both internally and externally.
  • Adept at using artificial intelligence tools and/or software to efficiently and effectively perform appropriate tasks, or interest in, and willingness to, learn to use artificial intelligence tools and/or software effectively in a legal setting.

Other Qualifications:

  • Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
  • This position may be considered an essential position with report to work obligations depending on the type of emergency, campus closure, or evacuation.
  • Must meet training and background check qualifications and comply with the Protection of Minors policy.
  • Successful candidate will be able to work independently, multi-task under time pressure while dealing with sensitive issues, materials, and executives, and work with the General Counsel’s staff effectively to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to apply strong interpersonal skills to successfully interface with all levels of the University in a cooperative and harmonious way.
  • Must be able to plan for short- and long-term events in a highly organized, accurate, and professional manner.
  • Must have strong communication and presentation skills.

Key Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:

Under the direction of the General Counsel -

  1. Assists to provide legal advice to the President and Board of Trustees on governance-related and other legal issues.
  2. Researches, drafts, and/or reviews (with or without external assistance) University wide, non-academic policies and procedures.
  3. Manages University’s litigation docket, including any active or potential litigation in state/federal court, or administrative agency proceedings.
  4. Reviews and drafts proposed contracts.
  5. Works with University risk management on insurance, indemnification and related issues, including litigation management.
  6. Assists with training of clients in relevant areas including policy drafting/interpretation, legal compliance, faculty and student issues, financial aid and related issues.
  7. Performs special projects and other related duties as assigned by the General Counsel.
  8. Directly supervises two full-time employees – the Associate General Counsel and Director of Student Conduct and Title IX Coordinator.
  9. Assists with seasonal peaks.
