JOB DUTIES : This position is regional and is located in the Information Technology (IT), or Data Processing, department at Hawai’i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua’i Region, which includes Kaua’i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH) and The Kaua’i Region Clinics, all operating under the public benefit corporation of the State of Hawai’i.
The IT Department is responsible for the overall planning, analysis, development, improvement and evaluation of the Kaua’i Region’s information technology systems. This department also provides direct support of proper systems usage, analytical review of system effectiveness, and coordination of process improvement and continuous system upgrades in their use of Health System technology including the electronic medical records (EMR); maintains consistent and reliable communication for enhancements, fixes and any new developments related to the EMR system; and serves as liaison with IT team, vendors and other HHSC facilities.
The Registered Professional Nurse (RPN) IV (Clinical Informaticist) coordinates, facilitates, and assists with the development, ongoing maintenance, evaluation, and optimization of the region-wide electronic medical records system. Responsibilities include direct support to Kaua’i Region clinicians (providers, nurses, pharmacists, ancillary, and other interdisciplinary team members) in their use of our EMR system; competency validation; evaluating and optimizing internal workflows; and serving as a liaison between our EMR system and EMR vendor to communicate necessary technical enhancements and troubleshooting issues. The RPN IV (Clinical Informaticist) is responsible for engaging, facilitating, and encouraging collaboration among facilities/SMEs and end users to accomplish these outcomes. The position may require working shifts, including weekends and holidays, as well as irregular and extended hours. It requires travel to each facility and clinic, and may also involve off-island travel for training or education on the EMR.
This position reports administratively to the IT Manager I (Regional), position number 57592, or their designee.
THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated; the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week.
BASIC EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: For nursing positions, applicants must have graduated from an accredited school of nursing.
EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: Applicants must have shown progressively responsible work experience of the kind and quality described below:
- EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: One and one-half (1-1/2) years of nursing experience required.
- SUPERVISORY APTITUDE: For Registered Professional Nurse IV, applicants must have demonstrated possession of supervisory aptitude. Supervisory aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader; previous work experience in a position that demonstrates or performs supervisory functions or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory or administrative capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.
SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED: Possession of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university school of nursing may be substituted for one year of nursing experience.
LICENSE REQUIRED: License to practice as a professional nurse in the State of Hawaii. For certain positions, possession of a motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
CERTIFICATION: Possession of current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Workers issued by the American Heart Association (AHA).
SELECT CERTIFICATION: Of the one and one-half (1 ½) years of professional nursing work experience, applicants must have one and one-half (1 ½) years of SME and/or process improvement workflow analysis experience with clinical/technical EMR experience in a clinic setting.

- Ability to: plan and schedule the work of others and utilize the principles and practices of supervision; apply nursing theory and practice in planning and giving nursing care; recognize, interpret, and evaluate symptoms of a patient’s condition; and take appropriate action; initiate and maintain working relationships with members of the medical staff, administration, nursing and other departments and agencies affiliated with the hospital; initiate and maintain working relationships with members of the medical staff, administration, nursing, and other departments and agencies affiliated with the hospital; work with and through others to accomplish projects on schedule; work with and develop positive relationships with individuals of diverse backgrounds and experiences to accomplish a shared goal; ability to facilitate individuals/groups towards shared goals; and resolve conflicts and differences in a positive, collaborative manner respecting differences.
