At Hilo Medical Center, a nationally-recognized "Top Performing" hospital, the Registered Professional Nurse is a valuable member of our team. We are currently seeking a Registered Professional Nurse IV – Wound Ostomy Nurse for our Patient Public Education unit.

The function of this unit is to provide inpatient and outpatient education to patients, the patient’s family and caregivers regarding medical conditions and healthy living.

This role is responsible for developing and implementing orientation, in-service training and continuing education programs impacting on patient and staff services; development, planning and administration of patient and family education programs that will assist them in preparation for the transition from hospital to home by increasing their awareness through appropriate and individualized educational teaching; providing consultative services to Nursing Service throughout the island of Hawaii by working closely with all rural Hospital Administrators and Directors of Nursing.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Plan, develop, implement, and evaluate inpatient and outpatient patient/family health education programs, using adult learning principles and measurable objectives to promote behavior change and safe discharge.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support discharge planning, continuity of care, follow-up education, and appropriate referrals for wound, ostomy, diabetes, and cardiac care.
  • Serve as a clinical education resource by developing policies, standards of care, and educational materials, including videos and teaching tools.
  • Coordinate and deliver continuing education and inservice training for clinical staff on wound/ostomy care, pressure injury prevention, diabetes management, incontinence, and cardiac education.
  • Act as a consultant and patient advocate, supporting quality improvement initiatives, community partnerships, and hospital-wide education and training programs.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION : Graduated from an accredited school of nursing. While not required, graduation from an accredited nursing program with a Bachelor’s Degree with emphasis on critical care nursing and/or administration is highly desirable.

Evidence of the appropriate training (e.g. official transcript of diploma) should be submitted with the application to be given credit for education. A legible photocopy will be accepted.

EXPERIENCE: One and one-half (1 ½) years of professional nursing work experience.

SELECT CERTIFICATION: In addition to the minimum requirements, candidates must meet the following education and experience requirements:

  1. Wound Care Certification, accredited by the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN), within one (1) year of employment. (Note: To be eligible for this Wound Care Certification, an applicant must have a BSN)
  2. Of the required one and one-half (1 ½) years of professional nursing experience, one and one-half (1 ½) years of professional nursing experience which provided demonstrated knowledge of the principles and practices of wound care service and the knowledge and abilities described above.
  3. In addition, either concurrently or separately, the ability to instruct others must have been demonstrated. Such demonstrated instructional ability may include, but is not limited to, the presentation of in-service training, close instructional supervision of trainees in a clinical setting, formal classroom instruction for staff or groups of patients, or other instructional experience such as a nursing team leader.

SUPERVISORY aptitude is the demonstration of aptitude or potential for the performance of supervisory duties through successful completion of regular or special assignments which involve some supervisory responsibilities or aspects; by serving as a group or team leader; or in similar work in which opportunities for demonstrating supervisory or administrative capabilities exist; by completion of training courses in supervision accompanied by application of supervisory skills in work assignments; or by favorable appraisals by a supervisor indicating the possession of supervisory potential.

SUBSTITUTION: Possession of a Master’s degree from an accredited college or university school of nursing may be substituted for one year of nursing experience.

CERTIFICATION: Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider (adult, child and infant) is required one (1) month after employment. (ACLS) Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support is required six (6) months after employment. Completion of a Critical Care course is preferred.

LICENSURE: State of Hawaii Registered Professional Nurse. Evidence of licensure is required with the application.
