To support the expansion of services within East Hawaii Health Clinics, the East Hawaii Region has created a Clinic Nurse Aide Training Program . Training program participants will be hired as Nurse Aides and trained to work in one of our clinics. This will be a great opportunity to join our East Hawai'i Health Clinics and East Hawai'i Region and be part of the team.
The upcoming cohort begins Monday, August 11, 2025. These positions are temporary with benefits, with an expected end date of March 31, 2026. Employees may apply to other positions within the clinic at that time.

This opportunity will require participants to visit clinics located in Hilo, Keaau and Pahoa.
HOURS OF OPERATION: Outpatient Clinic hours are typically Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm, closed on weekends and state holidays; but may vary based on East Hawai'i Health Clinic.
JOB DUTIES:
· Assist with Patient Exams and Procedures: Prepare patients for examinations, assist physicians during exams and treatments, and perform tasks such as applying dressings, slings, or oxygen, and assisting with casting or crutch fitting, if applicable.
· Perform Clinical and Diagnostic Tasks: Take and record vital signs and collect stool, urine, and sputum specimens for analysis.
· Manage Equipment and Supplies: Prepare and maintain instruments and supplies, ensure medical equipment is available and functional (e.g., oxygen tanks), and restock as needed.
· Support Safety, Cleanliness, and Compliance: Follow infection control and safety protocols, maintain a clean and safe environment, report incidents or unsafe conditions, and comply with all relevant policies and regulations.
· Communicate and Provide Patient-Centered Care: Interact courteously with patients, families, and staff, respect confidentiality, consider age, pain, and cultural needs, and assist with administrative tasks like phone calls and messages.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR ENTRY LEVEL: Knowledge of personal hygiene and bodily care. Nurse aide equivalent experience preferred.
PREREQUISITE QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED FOR FULL PERFORMANCE: Experience and Essential Knowledge and Abilities: In addition to the entry level qualifications, one (1) year of work experience in a health facility such as a hospital or similar medically oriented institution where the primary or basic objective was to observe and report on a variety of physical and/or mental symptoms and conditions and implement care and/or treatment procedures for a caseload of patients. Such experience must have demonstrated knowledge of basic nursing skills (i.e., taking vital signs, measuring output, recognition of abnormal signs and symptoms, etc.); first aid; patient rights; universal precautions; infection control; body mechanics; principles of growth and development; purpose and benefits of activities of daily living (i.e., eating/feeding, providing fluids, bathing, dressing, etc.); purpose and benefits of restorative care (i.e., use and application of assistive devices, range of motion activities, etc.); basic medical and nursing terminology; and the ability to assist and participate in the activities of the treatment team; assess each patient’s age specific needs; and independently provide age specific direct personal care services to a caseload of patients.
SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED: Completion of a practical nursing or professional nursing curriculum from an accredited school substitutes for the experience required for the full performance level.
CERTIFICATION: Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider (adult, child and infant) must be obtained within six (6) months of employment. Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) in Health Care Provider (adult, child and infant) is preferred. Please submit copy of certification with the application.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge of multiple/differing cultures; oral and written communication skills; good observation skills and ability to recall and report/document a series of events accurately; positive attitude; tolerant of unusual, irritating behavior (e.g., slow, repetitive, forgetful, confused, incontinent, messy).
