What are the responsibilities and job description for the Field Technician position at Hawaii Agriculture Research Center?
Job Overview
The field technician position requires a wide variety of field activity including, but not limited to, propagation, field preparation and maintenance including but not limited to fertilizer application, pest and weeds maintenance, irrigation upkeeping and repair, field recover, and other general farm maintenance. The position requires assisting HARC’s professional staff and following procedures of the experiments for the planting through harvesting of a variety of crops. There may be instances that require anyone in this position to coordinate, execute, or have direct supervision of selected projects. Must be able to work both independently and as part of a team to carry out assigned tasks. Must be familiar with field operation procedures (e.g. disking, plowing, spraying…) and all safety procedures associated with such operations. Responsibilities may include conducting or modifying established procedures and the documentation thereof, as directed by the assigned professional. Responsible for learning the proper use and maintenance of all instruments, tools, and vehicles used in the performance of the position.
Key Responsibilities:
· Maintenance of fields at substation such as controlling weeds, installing or repairing irrigation, and keeping area clean,
· Prepares crops/seedlings for shipping and/or/ processing,
· Travels as necessary to field site for installation and maintenance of experimental plots as well as seed collection,
· Helps in the installation and maintenance of greenhouse and field experiments according to protocols; lays out and plants field plots; prepares media and potted plants; measure and applies fertilizer or chemicals; collects data,
· Drives the vehicles and operates mechanical equipment for which he/she is trained.
Experience
Qualifications:
· Minimum of 2 years of experience with similar or related work,
· Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs,
· Must be able to work outside in a variety of weather conditions,
· Must have basic knowledge of farm equipment and tools, including but not limited to: knife, hoe, shovel, field tape measure, seed cleaning and grading, landscaping,
· Must have knowledge of propagation protocols,
· Must have effective communication and interpersonal skills,
· Must be able to work independently,
· Must be able to follow instructions and work collaboratively in a team environment,
· High school diploma required,
· Hawaii Driver’s License
Start Date: Immediately
Pay Range: $18-22/hr depending on experience
