This position is for a Physical Education Teacher at Havern School, serving students with learning disabilities. We follow a self-contained intervention model, with the teachers responsible for teaching all subject areas (reading, writing, math, science, and social studies). Differentiated instruction is delivered in small and large group format. This is a ten month, 1.0 FTE position. Starting salary range for this position is $48,000-$55,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
Roles and responsibilities:
- Teach Physical Education to students in lower and middle school, as well as develop lesson plans.
- Develop physical education program curricula in coordination with the Associate Head of School.
- Create a cohesive and inclusive learning environment for our students where student-centered problem solving remains a focus.
- Develop an appreciation of physical education as well as the ability to develop portfolios to pursue further studies for your students.
- Teach health education classes or other subjects as they arise.
- Maintain an orderly classroom environment and storage spaces by managing materials and student projects.
- Generate assignments and activities to promote learning in a creative manner.
- Communicate with students, parents and teachers in a professional and collaborative manner.
- Lead the student athletes toward activities that display their talents, reflects their perspective, and broadens their understanding.
- Teach kindergarten through 8th grade physical education and motor skills in a developmentally appropriate and engaging way.
- Complete progress monitoring reports.
- Supervise students at recess and lunch, as needed.
- Flexible, solution-oriented, and open-minded in a dynamic school environment.
- Assist as a second support teacher during other classes.
- Attend school functions, meetings, and trainings.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications and Competencies:
- Bachelor’s degree in physical education or similar, preferred
- Commitment to mission and philosophy of Havern School
- Sensitivity to intellectual, physical, and emotional needs of students
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills and strong organizational skills
- Experience in curriculum development, collaborative planning and team teaching
- Desire and ability to work with children with learning differences
- Believe in each individual’s ability and potential to learn and succeed
- Willingness to maintain current knowledge of techniques and best practices in education and desire to take advantage of professional development opportunities
- Collaborative team member and student-centered problem-solver
