Qualifications:
- High School diploma or GED, plus 2 years of tree work (climbing, cutting, trimming).
- A valid CDL Class B—and the commitment to keep it.
- Solid knowledge of arbor care: rigging, knots, ropes, and safe climbing practices.
- Familiarity with public works equipment, mechanics, and safe tree removal procedures.
- The strength and stamina to perform heavy manual labor in all weather conditions.
- The ability to follow oral and written instructions and learn new skills as needed.
- A team-first attitude with the initiative to work independently when required.
- Strong organization, integrity, and resourcefulness.
- The professionalism to work courteously—even when someone’s having a rough day.
Essential Functions:
- Operate saws, trimmers, bucket trucks, chippers, and other equipment to trim and remove trees.
- Assist with installing signs and pavement markings.
- Operate vehicles and equipment for snow and ice control—plows, salt spreaders, sweepers, backhoes, boom mowers, and more.
- Respond to emergency situations, weather events, and urgent public works needs.
- Use a wide range of hand and power tools, including chainsaws, woodchippers, string trimmers, and portable electric tools.
- Attend training sessions and classes to stay sharp and up to date.
- Work in field conditions with exposure to weather, dust, fumes, and hazardous road environments.
- Perform other public works duties as assigned.
Physical Demands:
- Frequent strenuous physical effort; ability to lift and carry 50–100 lbs.
- Regular climbing, bending, kneeling, reaching, squatting, and entering/exiting vehicles.
- Ability to work extended shifts during winter storms and emergency operations.
- Use of PPE including hearing, eye, foot, hand, and respiratory protection.
- Vision requirements include close focus and the ability to adjust quickly.
Work Environment:
- Outdoor, field-based work with exposure to inclement weather, dust, fumes, and hazardous road conditions.
Fast-paced periods with high activity, especially during storms and seasonal operations.
