POSITION SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

The Sustainability Compliance Manager plays a crucial role in ensuring that organizations adhere to sustainable practices, ethical standards, and regulatory requirements. They develop and implement robust governance frameworks, compliance programs, and sustainability strategies, driving responsible and sustainable business practices. The Manager collaborates with cross-functional teams, senior leadership, and external stakeholders to establish best practices and maintain a culture of sustainability and compliance throughout the organization. The role requires a blend of regulatory expertise, sustainability knowledge, and process management skills.


ESSENTION JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Oversee supply chain data collection, audits, certification, and third-party declarations related to products and packaging.

• Manage relationships with external vendors to collect, validate, and maintain supply chain compliance data, ensuring adherence to regulatory and company standards.

• Ensure compliance with all applicable domestic and international product and packaging safety and environmental impact regulations, including:

o REACH, RoHS, Proposition 65, TSCA, and PFAS restrictions

o EU Plastics Directive (EU 2019/665) and UK Plastic Packaging Tax

o EU Marine Sustainability Requests (MD & SDoC)

o VOC, ETL, and hazardous substance declarations

o Extended Producer Responsibility

• Lead, manage, and oversee product footprint calculation and disclosure, in alignment with relevant standards (e.g., ISO 14040/67, GHG Protocol, UK PAS 2050, TM65)

• Respond to customer requests related to sustainability and product compliance. Serve as the internal subject matter expert for regulatory updates and risk assessments related to product compliance and sustainability.

• Lead the organization’s sustainability efforts, including greenhouse accounting (Scopes 1, 2, and 3), in alignment with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol.

• Manage and oversee sustainability performance data related to energy use, water impacts, and waste management.

• Identify material social and environmental impacts related to the organization’s supply chain and the relative significance (impact/risk/opportunity) of each.

• Identify opportunities and drive initiatives to reduce embodied carbon and improve resource efficiency across the product design and manufacturing lifecycle.

• Oversee and manage company sustainability policies and commitments.

• Partner with engineering, procurement, and operations teams to embed sustainability and compliance considerations into product development and sourcing practices.

• Collaborate with marketing and senior leadership to integrate ESG metrics into annual reporting, communications, and strategic planning.

• Provide training and guidance to internal teams to build compliance and sustainability awareness.


QUALIFICATIONS:

• Demonstrated knowledge of global product compliance regulations (REACH, RoHS, Prop 65, TSCA, Conflict Minerals).

• Familiarity with global sustainability and ESG standards and frameworks (GHG Protocol, UN Global Compact, GRI, CDP, CSRD, TM 65).

• Proven ability to interpret and apply global regulations and manage complex data systems.

• Excellent communication and project management skills with a collaborative mindset.

• Experience managing supplier engagement and data collection for compliance.


EDUCATIONAL OR EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, supply chain and logistics, engineering, or a related technical field. Master’s preferred.

• 5–10 years of experience in product compliance or sustainability program management in a manufacturing or industrial setting.

• Professional certifications (Sustainable Management, Environmental Policy/Regulatory Affairs, LEED, CPSM, etc.) preferred.

• Experience with life cycle assessment (LCA) or product footprint calculation tools preferred.

• Familiarity with foodservice or equipment manufacturing industries preferred.
