Job Title:

Extended School Year Social Worker


Job Summary:

The Extended School Year School Social Worker will provide individual and group social-emotional support to students and families. The school social worker will also be knowledgeable of current state laws, policies, procedures, and regulations regarding proficiency standards.


Qualifications:

Master’s degree required in Social Work

Professional Educator License (PEL)


Evaluation:

The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with the provisions of the Board’s policy on the Evaluation of Certified.


Reports to:

Summer School Principal and Director of Special Services


Terms of Employment:

This is a part-time, hourly position for four weeks, from June 2nd to June 26th, with an additional four days of planning and professional development to be determined.


  • Hours: 7:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday
  • Compensation: $45 per hour
  • This position does not include benefits

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide Individual and Group Counseling – Offer individual and group counseling services to students to address emotional, behavioral, and social challenges, in alignment with their Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals.
  • Support Students with Social-Emotional Development – Help students develop appropriate coping strategies, emotional regulation skills, and positive social behaviors, focusing on personal empowerment and academic success.
  • Collaborate with Educational Teams – Work closely with teachers, special education staff, and related service providers to ensure the social-emotional needs of students are addressed in their daily learning environment.
  • Facilitate Crisis Intervention – Provide immediate support and intervention for students experiencing emotional crises, helping to de-escalate situations and ensure student safety and well-being.
  • Assist with Behavioral Interventions – Develop and implement behavior intervention plans (BIPs) for students requiring additional support, focusing on positive behavior reinforcement and conflict resolution strategies.
  • Conduct Social-Emotional Assessments – Evaluate students’ social and emotional development, identifying areas of concern and providing recommendations for appropriate interventions or additional services.
  • Provide Parent and Family Support – Offer guidance and resources to parents and caregivers to help them support their child’s emotional and behavioral needs at home, fostering strong home-school partnerships.
  • Promote Positive Peer Relationships – Facilitate group activities and programs that encourage peer interaction, collaboration, and conflict resolution skills to build a positive and inclusive school culture.
  • Coordinate with Community Resources – Connect students and families with community-based services, including mental health resources, crisis support, and other relevant programs, to ensure comprehensive care for students.
  • Document and Maintain Confidential Records – Keep accurate and up-to-date records of counseling sessions, assessments, interventions, and communications with families, in compliance with confidentiality regulations and school policies.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands of a School Social Worker during the extended school year require the ability to remain active and engaged with students in a variety of settings. Social workers must be able to sit, stand, and move throughout the classroom, therapy rooms, and other school environments while providing counseling and support. The role requires flexibility in managing both individual and group sessions, which may involve sitting on the floor or in small spaces for extended periods of time. Social workers must also be prepared to respond quickly in crisis situations, requiring physical stamina to manage emergency interventions or de-escalation techniques. Strong communication skills are essential, as social workers need to project their voice and use nonverbal cues when engaging with students, particularly in group settings. In addition, they must have the physical ability to assist students with social-emotional tasks, facilitate group activities, and move between classrooms or areas of the school to work with students in various contexts. The position also involves occasional light lifting of materials, such as counseling resources, seating arrangements, and educational tools. Social workers must be adaptable to different environmental conditions, whether indoors or in outdoor settings while maintaining the ability to provide effective support in a physically demanding, fast-paced school environment.
