Job Summary:
The Safety and Security Specialist maintains a secure, welcoming district environment through high-visibility monitoring of all facilities and parking areas. Key duties include security monitoring, emergency response, access control, incident reporting, collaboration, first aid support, crisis communication, safety awareness, enforcing student pass policies, and confidentiality. This role supports administration by handling behavioral referrals, assisting School Resource Officers, and documenting incidents while serving as a professional first point of contact for visitors.
Qualifications and Skills:
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required
- Valid driver’s license
Experience:
A minimum of 3 years of experience in law enforcement, security, emergency management, education, or a related field is highly desired. Experience in a school setting or with school safety programs is highly desirable. Being multilingual in English and Spanish is highly desirable.

Terms of Employment:
This is a 9-month IMRF hourly non-union position with a starting range of $21.00 - $22.00 established by the Board of Education.

Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Professional Standards and Expectations

- General Security Duties
- Monitor controlled entrances and greet visitors to help direct them to their destination
- Monitor interior and exterior spaces, including athletic facilities for suspicious or unauthorized persons or activities
- Monitor and guide students to ensure they remain in authorized areas
- Monitor student arrival and dismissal, including student-approved exit via high school-approved flexible scheduling
- Check parking lots daily for parking tags.
- Ensure that students who are walking the halls have passes.
- Write referrals for any student who is disruptive, misses instructional time, or exhibits other behavioral problems.
- Assist the administration by escorting suspended students out of the building.
- Monitor video cameras for students leaving school, being disruptive in hallways, or engaging in any criminal activity on school grounds.
- Assist with directing traffic in the student parking lot and/or acting as a crossing guard.
- Assist School Resource Officers, Security, and Administration as needed.
- Provide written reports of incidents and accidents as needed.
- Attend after-hours extracurricular activities on weekends or evenings as assigned.
3. General Safety Duties
- Build positive and encouraging relationships with students and staff
- Report any unsafe conditions, irregularities to the school culture, or potential dangers to the staff, students, or visitors
- Work with the administration, teachers, and students to establish regulations and procedures for students when necessary.
- Train, understand, and demonstrate correct procedural practices for all school safety plans, including standard response protocol (SRP) and the standard reunification method (SRM), and be able to answer safety-related questions when asked by students or staff
- Assist in the coordination, review, and documentation of safety drills
- Provide first aid support assistance when necessary and coordinate with medical professionals
- Train, understand, and demonstrate a high working knowledge of the Raptor Emergency Management platform
- Constructively critique district safety procedures for effectiveness, and positively suggest operational improvements.
- Provide de-escalation tactics as needed in compliance with CPI certification

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The physical demands of this position include frequent standing or walking for extended periods. The employee may occasionally lift, push, pull, and move up to 75 pounds. Repetitive bending at the waist, kneeling, stooping, and crouching to assist are also required. Employees may reach overhead, above the shoulders, and horizontally. Employees must meet all physical demands to operate a motor vehicle.
