JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Gang & Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist
REPORTS TO: Principal or designee
UNIT CLASSIFICATION: Non Represented
PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The Prevention Specialist is responsible for working collaboratively with the School Student Support Team to organize and maintain the gang and substance abuse prevention strategies. Responsibilities include management and coordination of the Prevention Club, MTSS supports, including prevention and intervention, and the facilitation of identified curriculum to meet the prevention and intervention objectives and goals of the school. Position contingent on continued grant funding.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*:
- Collaborate with the School and Student Support Team in order to facilitate communication with staff and administrators to meet program goals; report on progress and challenges, implement, collect and enter data for required data collection strategies to support identification and progress of students on gang awareness agreements and/or substance abuse issues.
- Assist in gathering data to identify best practices for prevention and intervention.
- Collaborate with the School Staff in activities such as:
- Identifying community resources and understanding student needs
- Analyzing data
- Conducting planning activities to enhance prevention
- Assist in the implementation, collection and data entry for required data collection.
- Work closely with the Youth Coalition Specialist or support the work of the “Protecting Our Youth Coalition”
- Develop and implement an after school Prevention Club.
- Work with the Student Support Team to identify students at-risk for substance abuse and gang activity.
- Plan, organize, and conduct small prevention/intervention groups
- Attend Community Engagement Board to support students and families
- Support student transitions from elementary and to high school.
- Supervise students before school, during transitions, lunch and after school.
- Collect, organize, and analyze data to identify students with at-risk factors.
- Assist in the continued development of a positive school culture and climate.
- Confer with parents, teachers, counselors, support service personnel, and students on matters of substance abuse and gang prevention and intervention
- Confer with and make appropriate referrals to psychologists, social workers, and other personnel.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding student records and information.
- Other related duties and responsibilities as assigned.
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
Responsibilities include: working under the supervision and direction of the school administrators, following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; and operating within a defined budget.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
The usual and customary methods of performing the job’s functions requires the following physical demands; significant lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 70% sitting, 15% walking and 15% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations, some hazardous conditions and in a clean atmosphere.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Experience
BA Degree preferred in education, health education, communications, social sciences, or experience in a closely related field.
Certified Prevention Specialist Designation or must obtain within 12 months of hire date.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Bilingual/Biliterate in English/Spanish preferred
Knowledge or community-based prevention programs involving youth, drug/alcohol/tobacco abuse or other related community health prevention of counseling.
Knowledge of local organizations, services, the community to be served; and prevention.
Ability to:

- Organize and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously;
- Demonstrate the ability to work in teams, as well as individual initiative;

- Attend evening and weekend meetings and events;
- Demonstrate basic proficiency in word processing and Excel
