Position Overview
The Harrison County Public Library seeks an experienced, collaborative, and forward-thinking Director to lead a mid-size, multi-branch public library system serving a population of 39,654. The system includes a main branch, three branch locations, and a genealogy and local history center housed in the original Carnegie building.
This executive-level position provides strategic, administrative, and professional leadership for all library operations and serves as the chief advocate and spokesperson for the library. The Director reports to the Library Board and works closely with community partners to ensure responsive, equitable, and innovative library services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide vision and leadership aligned with the library’s mission, strategic plan, and community priorities.
- Plan, direct, and evaluate system-wide library operations across multiple branches and departments.
- Advise and support the Library Board; implement board-approved policies and decisions.
- Prepare and manage the annual budgets; ensure sound fiscal stewardship.
- Lead, mentor, and evaluate senior staff; promote a positive, inclusive, and professional workplace culture.
- Oversee collection development, programs, and services that reflect community needs and support intellectual freedom.
- Champion equitable access, diversity, inclusion, and privacy in all library services.
- Build partnerships with local organizations, schools, government agencies, and stakeholders.
- Represent the library system at public meetings, professional conferences, and community events.
- Guide the effective use of technology and emerging trends to enhance service delivery.
Required Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLIS) from an ALA-accredited institution and an Indiana State LC1 or the ability to obtain in three years or less.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible leadership and supervisory experience in a public library or related organization.
- Demonstrated experience in budgeting, personnel management, and strategic planning.
- Strong knowledge of public library principles, trends, and best practices.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience leading a multi-branch library system or comparably complex organization.
- Proven success in community engagement, advocacy, and partnership development.
- Experience with facilities planning, capital projects, or system-wide initiatives.
Salary and Benefits
- Salary starts at $90,000 commensurate with experience.
