SHIFT LEAD and OPERATOR [This is a WORKING LEAD Position]

JOB SUMMARY:
This individual determines the best and safest utilization of materials, labor, and equipment to ensure seamless operations with minimal downtime. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE 2nd SHIFT LEAD:
Production:
The best candidates will have manufacturing, wood processing, and/or cabinet component industry experience.
We expect the incoming lead to already possess a majority of the requisite knowledge to:
- Lead a team through positive example.
- Understand scheduling to create and sustain an efficient workflow.
- Be able to learn and improve quickly for speed and quality production.
- Become familiar with, learn to operate, and then support and train others on best practices for safe and efficient operation of machines. (Ex. Gang/Rip saw, Chop Saw, planer-sander, glue clamp carrier, P-700 Moulder, etc.)
- Directly supervise machine operators to ensure production schedule is met efficiently and effectively.
- Maintain high standards of quality control, conduct regular inspections, and implement corrective actions as needed.
- Conduct reviews, document correction, and hold and maintain high standards.
- Have the ability to organize and pull necessary materials for the shift.
- Use the ACCESS database to track production progress.
- Maintain accurate production records to track performance and facilitate analysis.
- Set goals and deadlines and report on team performance and metrics.
- Oversee waste recapture and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
- Effectively and appropriately communicate with the Production Manager (direct report) and other Leads and Leadership.
Maintenance:
- Basic daily practices to support machine preventive maintenance.
- Report any breakdowns, or other challenges and needs, to the Maintenance team, and assist with scheduling for service and repair access as needed.
Safety:
- Attend all safety committee meetings and safety training sessions.
- Train employees on Job Hazard Analysis (JHA's) and Lock Out/Tag Out (LOTO).
- Enforce health and safety policies and procedures. Ensure safe machine operation and guarding.
- Conduct regular safety audits and building walk-throughs as scheduled and directed; document findings and address concerns promptly.
- Report injuries and conduct investigations, fill out appropriate forms as needed; and work to prevent recurrence.
Leadership:

- Facilitate clear and open communication between team members, management, and other departments to ensure smooth coordination of activities and timely resolution of production issues.
- Set clear team goals; recognize, coach, and support your team.
- Lead employee discussions and evaluations.
- Recognize high performance and seek to reward accomplishments.
- Participate in daily and weekly lead team and whole-group meetings.
- Actively listen to team members and give constructive feedback.
- Address any issues or challenges that arise, troubleshooting problems and implementing solutions to minimize disruptions and maximize productivity.
- Ability to demonstrate a high level of accountability.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED. Post-secondary education is a plus but not required.
- 2-5 years of management/leadership/supervisory experience.
- Ability to independently solve problems, make decisions, and navigate challenges without explicit instructions or constant guidance.
- Computer proficient. Effective email communication is the standard and high proficiency in Microsoft Outlook is absolutely necessary.
- Ability to read, write, spell, and communicate professionally in English.
- Must have the ability to calculate figures and amounts; have good number sense and estimation skills.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to walk, squat, stoop, bend, reach, turn and climb.
- Must be able to lift/move/push up to 75 lbs.
- Must be able to stand for long periods.
- Must be present each day for the entire shift—9:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Working Conditions
- Workplace noise is in the high range and requires use of hearing protection.
- Workplace is a semi-climate-controlled environment – it may be quite warm in the summer and cold in the winter.
- Requires the use of foot protection (steel or composite-toed shoes) and eye protection (safety glasses).
- Workplace generates wood dust - if allergic to wood dust, this may not be the right job for you.
