Happy Day Support Adult Day Program is a welcoming, compassionate community where adults with disabilities receive the care, support, and encouragement they need to thrive. Located in Smithfield, NC, our program focuses on promoting independence, building meaningful connections, and providing a safe, uplifting environment for every individual we serve.
*For this role, we are looking for someone who is available Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4–8 PM, as well as every other weekend from 10 AM–6 PM. The individual is female and uses a wheelchair.
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) is responsible for providing care, assistance, and support to individuals with intellectual disabilities and/or dual diagnoses. DSPs work directly with clients to ensure their safety, promote independence, and support them in their daily living activities. The DSP will follow individualized care plans and behavioral strategies while maintaining the dignity and rights of each client.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Client Support
- Assist clients with daily living activities, including personal hygiene, meal preparation, and dressing.
- Provide support in achieving goals outlined in Individual Service Plans (ISPs), such as skill development, social interaction, and community engagement.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of clients during all activities and outings.
Behavioral Management
- Implement positive behavioral intervention strategies as directed by the Qualified Professional (QP) and Program Director.
- Support clients in managing challenging behaviors and respond to crises when needed.
- Document and report behavioral incidents or concerns to supervisors promptly.
Documentation
- Accurately document client progress, activities, incidents, and behavioral changes.
- Complete required daily logs, reports, and communication sheets per policy.
- Maintain confidentiality of all client information in accordance with HIPAA and organizational standards.
Transportation & Outings
- Provide transportation for clients to and from the program or community outings.
- Ensure client safety during transportation by following all safety protocols.
- Assist in planning and participating in community outings, recreational activities, and social events.
Health & Medication Support
- Administer medications as prescribed, following organizational policies.
- Monitor clients for adverse reactions and report medication errors immediately.
- Assist in maintaining clients’ physical health by following medical orders and attending to health needs.
Advocacy
- Advocate for the rights and dignity of each client.
- Encourage client participation in decision-making and ensure their preferences are respected.
Communication
- Communicate effectively with the Program Director, QP, DSP Manager, and team members about client progress and concerns.
- Build and maintain professional relationships with clients, families, and other stakeholders.
Training & Development
- Participate in required trainings such as CPR, First Aid, bloodborne pathogens, medication administration, and crisis intervention.
- Continue skill development in areas related to intellectual disabilities, behavioral management, and client care.
Compliance
- Follow all organizational policies, including health and safety, client rights, and emergency preparedness.
- Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations governing the care of individuals with disabilities.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Minimum one year of experience working with individuals with intellectual disabilities or related field preferred.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work as part of a team and follow supervisor direction.
- Patience, compassion, and commitment to client-centered care.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record (if providing transportation).
Work Environment
- May involve working in clients’ homes, community settings, or facility environments.
- Must be able to lift and assist clients as needed, including transfers.
- Flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, may be required.
