Hansell Tierney is partnering with an innovative aerospace engineering organization to identify a Avionics Telemetry Engineer to join their growing team.


Location: California – onsite

Compensation: The annual base salary range for this role is $83,000 – $158,000. This role may also be eligible for discretionary bonus or other incentive compensation.


POSITION SUMMARY

A leading aerospace organization is seeking Avionics Engineers (Level I, II, or Senior) to support the design, integration, testing, and maintenance of advanced flight vehicle avionics systems, with a focus on telemetry (TM). This role involves close collaboration with cross-functional teams to support testing and operations across multiple environments.


Essential Responsibilities

  • Contribute to requirements development, architecture design, testing, and operation of instrumentation, network, and telemetry systems
  • Support flight operations by ensuring data systems are fully prepared for testing and missions
  • Assist in selection and integration of sensors, data acquisition units, computers, and network equipment
  • Design and support aircraft wiring/harness systems for instrumentation and telemetry
  • Configure and manage onboard instrumentation systems for real-time monitoring and post-mission analysis
  • Support development and maintenance of software tools (e.g., configuration, simulation, deployment, and analysis tools)
  • Define, document, and manage subsystem requirements for evolving system configurations
  • Develop and execute telemetry, instrumentation, and network tests
  • Support integration activities such as power checks, sensor calibration, and system checkout
  • Collaborate with engineers and technicians across multiple disciplines
  • Prepare and present materials for design reviews, flight readiness reviews, and post-mission analysis
  • Demonstrate accountability, integrity, and strong follow-through


Qualifications & Skills


Required Qualifications:

  • Experience in telemetry, instrumentation, or network engineering within operational or regulated environments
  • Strong understanding of Ethernet networking (TCP, UDP, multicast, etc.)
  • Experience integrating data acquisition systems (analog, discrete, and digital protocols such as ARINC 429 or similar)
  • Familiarity with RF systems (transmitters, receivers, encoders/decoders)
  • Experience working with data acquisition systems and data logging tools
  • Experience writing and managing system requirements
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting flight test instrumentation systems
  • Experience designing and manufacturing aircraft wiring harnesses
  • Experience with aircraft or launch vehicle development programs
  • Experience configuring and testing end-to-end RF telemetry systems
  • Knowledge of telemetry standards (e.g., IRIG 106 or similar)
  • Hands-on experience with flight testing or mission operations
  • Experience with requirements management tools (e.g., Jama, DOORS)
  • Experience working in mission control or similar operational environments
  • Active security clearance


Technical Skills


Required:

  • Proficiency in at least one programming language (e.g., C/C , C#, Python)
  • Familiarity with source control systems (e.g., Git)
  • Experience with CI/CD tools (e.g., Jenkins, Bamboo)
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Visio)


Preferred:

  • Experience with relational, document, or time-series databases
  • Familiarity with data acquisition hardware platforms (e.g., Curtiss-Wright, Safran, or similar)
  • Experience with programmable automation controllers
  • Additional experience with CI/CD tools and data system architectures


Education & Experience

  • Level I: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or related field) and 0–2 years of experience, or equivalent combination
  • Level II: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or related field) and 2–5 years of experience, or equivalent combination
  • Senior: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (or related field) and 5–10 years of experience, or equivalent combination

  • On-site position based in Southern California
  • Travel required up to approximately 10%
