The Tank Waste Inventory and Characterization (TWIC) organization mission is to deliver reliable waste inventory estimates for the Hanford tank farms by maintaining detailed tank was characterizations and to provide comprehensive data to support decisions on tank safety, waste management, and environmental protection through quality-focused waste sampling and analysis plans. To this end, TWIC updates and maintains the Best-Basis Inventory (BBI), which is the official tank waste inventory at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Site.


H2C seeks a Chemical Engineer responsible for preparing BBI and integrating characterization data, process knowledge, and surveillance data to estimate double-shell and single-shell tank waste composition by phase. This scope includes working with a suite of tools to aid in producing BBI inventories. In addition, this position will maintain the BBI database and other associated tools including but not limited to characterization reports, means and confidence intervals, tank waste inventory, and sample data. Further activities include preparing sampling and analysis plans and data quality objectives for waste sampling and characterization events for H2C; integrating with analytical laboratories; interpreting chemical data for outside organizations; and coordinating technical and programmatic sampling and characterization events with multiple internal and external interfacing organizations and stakeholders.


Duties include:

  • Develop chemical inventories of waste tanks using sample data, process knowledge, and model data.
  • Create spreadsheets and supporting documents for process knowledge information or other applications as requested.
  • Write sample and analysis plans for tank waste, environmental, and multi-media samples.
  • Prepare and administer sampling program requirements via Quality Assurance documents, procedures, and assessments.
  • Review and reconcile characterization data (analytical, radiochemical, and mineralogical).
  • Develop clear, concise, and error-free engineering documents.
  • Review and complete Corrective actions.
  • Extensive knowledge of spreadsheets, solvers, and data comparison.
  • Provide support for data uploads, review and comparison of analytical data, and addition of new/revised data.
  • Obtain and maintain Engineering Technical Staff Qualification card.


Required Qualifications

Grade 17:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related technical discipline; and
  • Four (4) years related experience


Grade 18:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related technical discipline; and
  • Six (6) years related experience
  • Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is larger, and the expected level of performance is increased.


Grade 19:

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry or related technical discipline; and
  • Eight (8) years related experience
  • Note the essential duties for this grade level are like that of the previous grade level, however the scope of responsibility is significantly larger, and the expected level of performance is greatly increased.


Desired Qualifications

  • Previous Hanford experience.
  • Previous inventory and characterization experience, including BBIs, sampling, laboratory, and data analysis.
  • Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Must be able to effectively communicate technical information to programmatic and regulatory stakeholders. Requires the ability to effectively perform in multi-discipline cross-functional teams that define Hanford mission objectives.


Compensation & Benefits

In accordance with the company's philosophy on compensation for exempt and salaried non-exempt employees, H2C takes into consideration a variety of factors when determining initial grade and salary to include assigned job scope and responsibility, a candidate's qualifications as compared to internal comparators performing in a similar role, and the external labor market. A salary offer will be made at the appropriate grade level and within the targeted hiring range posted according to these factors. Note a candidate's prior salary history will not be taken into consideration.


Hiring Range Minimum: $99,063

Hiring Range Maximum: $151,038
