Fire Marshal – Job Description
Position Summary:
The Fire Marshal is responsible for administering and managing the Fire Prevention Bureau for Hampton County Fire Rescue. The Fire Marshal oversees fire prevention activities, fire inspections, fire investigations, code enforcement, public education, and community risk reduction programs. The position ensures compliance with applicable fire codes, life safety regulations, and county ordinances to protect life and property within Hampton County.
The Fire Marshal serves as the authority having jurisdiction (AHJ) for fire code enforcement and fire investigations within the county.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Fire Prevention and Code Enforcement
- Conduct fire and life safety inspections of commercial, industrial, and public occupancy buildings.
- Enforce adopted fire codes, local ordinances, and life safety regulations.
- Issue notices of violation and work with property owners to achieve compliance.
- Review building and development plans for fire code compliance.
- Coordinate with county planning and building departments regarding fire protection requirements.
- Responds to all dispatched structure fires and fire alarms
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications • High school diploma or GED required. • Associate or bachelor’s degree in Fire Science, Fire Administration, or related field preferred. • Minimum of five years of fire service experience. • Experience in fire prevention, inspections, or investigations preferred.
Special Requirements
Certifications (Preferred or Required) • Firefighter I&II Certification (required) • Fire Inspector I (required) Inspector II (preferred) • Fire Investigator Certification (required) • Plans Examiner Certification (required) Certifications consistent with NFPA professional standards are strongly encouraged.
