Duties And Responsibilities
Responsible for assessing reading levels, identifying difficulties, collaborating with classrooms teachers, facilitating intervention, and conducting remediation either in resource or co-teaching environments.
- Facilitates and conducts the screening of students using appropriate assessment tools related to language acquisition, language development, reading proficiency and fluency.
- Analyzes data from assessments and screening measures to identify areas for improvement, establish goals and monitor progress of students.
- Facilitates the implementation and management of district and state reading assessments and programs.
- Uses diagnostic data to tailor instruction within skill-level groupings.
- Uses best practices to develop students' phonemic awareness/phonological association skills and oral language skills (speaking and listening).
- Uses knowledge of cueing systems of language (phonics, syntax and semantics) and phonics instruction, including sound/syllable relationships, phonemes, morphemes, decoding skills and word attack skills to differentiate small group instruction.
- Adheres to district models and instructional practices in the following areas: word study, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, and grammar.
- Uses effective communication skills with a variety of groups, including: students, parents, teachers, support staff, administrators, community leaders, etc.
- Develops lessons and conducts reading intervention utilizing research-based instructional strategies and best practices.
- Maintains an ongoing record of individual student progress.
- Collaborates to instruct and advise teachers in the skills necessary to differentiate reading instruction.
- Collaborates within a professional learning community in order to nurture and sustain a school culture and instructional program conducive to accelerated student achievement.
- Implements appropriate intervention programs (to include direct instruction, small group instruction, and software programs) for struggling readers as directed by the district.
- Attends professional development and professional activities to improve/maintain knowledge of reading skills and remediation practice.
- Keeps abreast of developments, research, and new technology in the field.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement as a Reading Specialist. Master's in Reading preferred.
- Must possess an in-depth knowledge of instructional best practices and differentiated instruction, as well as effective instructional delivery techniques.
- Must possess excellent organizational and communication skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers and administrators.
