JOB TITLE:              EMT - Basic

DEPARTMENT:      Emergency Medical Services

JOB SUMMARY:     Responds to emergency calls and facilitates patient transfers. Provides essential first aid and medical care to patients in emergency situations, ensuring their comfort and safety. Communicates vital patient information to dispatch and maintains accurate patient care records in compliance with ambulance service protocols. Ensures vehicles and equipment are maintained in optimal working condition to support efficient operations. OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Class I.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

A. Vehicle Operation and Maintenance

1. Operates emergency vehicles safely, ensuring proper maintenance.
2. Transports sick or injured patients to medical facilities or designated locations, adhering to safety procedures.
3. Maintains ambulance and equipment in optimal condition through daily cleaning and inspections to ensure safety and efficiency.
4. Reports any required maintenance to the supervisor in a timely manner.

B. Emergency Medical Assistance

1. Assists in safely extricating patients from difficult or dangerous situations, prioritizing patient safety and condition.
2. Administers first aid and medical care in accordance with training, EMS protocols, and best practices.
3. Provides emotional support to patients while respecting their rights and religious beliefs.
4. Delivers age-appropriate care to neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric patients based on demonstrated knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan.
5. Assesses and interprets data for patients across all age groups to determine age-specific needs and administers appropriate care in accordance with department policies.

C. Clerical Responsibilities

1. Collects relevant patient information by interviewing patients or witnesses, evaluating the patient's condition, and communicating this information to dispatchers or emergency departments via radio.
2. Accurately maintains dispatching records and completes required documentation to ensure a detailed record of activities.
3. Gathers necessary patient information for billing purposes.
4. Completes all reports in a timely and accurate manner.

D. Supply Management

1. Ensures restocking of supplies after each call to maintain readiness.
2. Regularly checks supplies for expiration and ensures equipment is functioning properly.

OTHER SIGNIFICANT REQUIREMENTS:

A. Maintains strict confidentiality when handling sensitive information.
B. Builds positive relationships with the community, including patients, families, medical staff, law enforcement, and other first responders.
C. Adheres to safety guidelines and policies established by the healthcare system.
D. Ensures cleanliness of the station and ambulance units.
E. Follows all standard operating procedures and protocols.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

            A.  Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.

B.  Personal job-related skills:  Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Proficient in the operation of emergency medical vehicles and equipment. Strong ability to comply with hospital, local, and state regulations in the provision of emergency medical care.

C.  Licensure, registry or certification:  Current certification as an EMT-Basic by the Texas Department of State Health Services, along with a valid driver's license.

            D.  Experience

1.  Preferred Work Experience: One year of experience in an emergency medical environment.

2. Required Training: AHA CPR certification.         

E.  Physical and mental requirements:  This position involves intermittent walking, sitting, and standing, as well as bending, stooping, and reaching. The role requires the ability to lift up to 150 lbs and to push, pull, and carry patients using appropriate equipment. In certain situations, the ability to work at heights, travel long distances, and perform under stress or in potentially hostile environments is required.
