Kansas City: Overnight Supervisor

Overview:

HALO is seeking a dynamic and compassionate Overnight Supervisor to provide leadership, supervision, and operational oversight during overnight hours within HALO's Transitional Living Program. This position is responsible for maintaining a safe, stable, trauma-informed, and supportive environment for youth while providing direct supervision and guidance to overnight staff.

The Overnight Supervisor serves as the primary overnight point of contact for staff and is responsible for responding to youth needs, behavioral concerns, emergencies, staffing issues, facility concerns, and other situations requiring supervisory judgment. The Supervisor ensures that overnight operations are conducted consistently with HALO policies, program expectations, licensing and contractual requirements, and trauma-informed practices.

This position combines staff leadership, youth support, safety oversight, crisis response, documentation, and overnight program operations. The Supervisor is expected to model professionalism, sound judgment, appropriate boundaries, and a youth-centered approach at all times.

Responsibilities

Youth Safety, Supervision, and Support

• Provide active supervision and support to youth residing in the Home during overnight hours.

• Maintain a safe, secure, respectful, and welcoming environment for all youth.

• Monitor youth activities and interactions and respond appropriately to behavioral or safety concerns.

• Conduct or oversee required youth wellness and safety checks in accordance with program policy.

• Support youth in following program expectations while utilizing trauma-informed and strength-based approaches.

• Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with all youth.

• Recognize and respond to signs of distress, crisis, conflict, or other concerns affecting youth safety or well-being.

• Support youth in developing independence, responsibility, problem-solving skills, and appropriate decision-making.

• Reinforce positive behavior and progress through appropriate encouragement and recognition.

• Protect youth confidentiality and privacy in accordance with HALO policy and applicable laws and regulations.

Overnight Staff Supervision

• Provide direct supervision, leadership, and direction to Overnight Youth Advocates 

• Conduct shift assignments and delegate responsibilities appropriately including but not limited to, chore checks, transportation, curfew reminders, and medication administration .

• Ensure staff arrive on time, remain on duty, and are prepared to perform assigned responsibilities.

• Monitor staff performance, professionalism, communication, and adherence to agency policies.

• Provide coaching, guidance, and corrective feedback when appropriate.

• Address routine staff concerns and communicate significant performance issues to the HALO Home Manager and Senior Youth Advocate

• Ensure staff maintain appropriate professional boundaries with youth.

• Ensure overnight staff follow required supervision, documentation, safety, medication, communication, and emergency procedures.

• Assist with training, orientation, and onboarding of new overnight staff.

• Ensure adequate staffing coverage throughout the overnight shift and promptly communicate coverage concerns to management.

• Model appropriate workplace behavior, professionalism, teamwork, and trauma-informed communication.

Shift Management and Overnight Operations

• Serve as the primary supervisory contact for HALO during assigned overnight shifts.

• Conduct thorough shift-to-shift communication and review information relevant to youth safety and program operations.

• Review youth schedules, appointments, curfews, behavioral concerns, safety plans, and other relevant information.

• Ensure assigned overnight duties are completed accurately and consistently.

• Monitor compliance with program rules, routines, and expectations.

• Ensure the physical environment remains safe, clean, organized, and appropriate for youth.

• Conduct or oversee facility safety and security checks.

• Identify and report maintenance, safety, security, or supply concerns.

• Ensure necessary supplies are available and communicate replenishment needs to Home Program Manager

• Support preparation of the Homes for morning operations.

• Ensure appropriate transition and communication between overnight and daytime staff.

• Participate in required staff meetings, trainings, professional development, and supervisory activities.

• Follow applicable Missouri Department of Social Services requirements, contractual requirements, licensing standards, and other applicable regulations.

Crisis and Emergency Response

• Serve as the first level of supervisory response to overnight emergencies and significant incidents.

• Respond calmly and appropriately to behavioral, medical, safety, security, or facility emergencies.

• Utilize established crisis intervention and de-escalation procedures.

• Determine when additional assistance from management, emergency services, medical providers, behavioral health professionals, or other resources is necessary.

• Contact emergency services when circumstances warrant.

• Notify the appropriate personnel according to HALO protocol.

• Direct and coordinate staff during emergencies to ensure youth safety.

• Ensure required incident reports and notifications are completed following significant incidents.

• Participate in post-incident review, debriefing, and follow-up as requested.

Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED required; bachelor's degree in social work, human services, psychology, criminal justice, counseling, or a related field strongly preferred.

• Minimum of two (2) years of experience working with young adults in a residential, transitional living, foster care, homeless services, behavioral health, or related human services setting.

• Previous supervisory, lead, or shift-lead experience.

• Demonstrated ability to work effectively with youth experiencing trauma, housing instability, family disruption, or other significant life challenges.

• Ability to work overnight hours, weekends, holidays, and occasional additional hours as program needs require. 

• Remain awake, alert, and attentive throughout an overnight shift.

• Strong communication, organization, documentation, and problem-solving skills.

• Successful completion of required background checks, reference checks, and motor vehicle report
