What are the responsibilities and job description for the Hall Family Foundation Program Officer position at Hallmark Inc.?

WHO WE ARE

At the Hall Family Foundation, we are committed to enhancing the quality of human life in the Greater Kansas City area. With over $50 million invested annually, we strive to ensure that all members of our community can experience what is possible. Established in 1943, our mission is rooted in the vision of our founders—Joyce C. Hall, Elizabeth Ann Hall, and Rollie B. Hall. We are more than funders – we are strategic partners, investing in ideas that aim to address complex challenges and drive lasting impact.

A career at the Hall Family Foundation is an opportunity to be at the center of transformative change—building relationships, connecting the dots between issues and opportunities, and making strategic decisions that shape the future of our community.

THE OPPORTUNITY

The Hall Family Foundation is seeking a Program Officer who brings intellectual agility, strategic acumen, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. This role requires someone who can quickly assess opportunities, anticipate challenges, and make thoughtful, data-driven decisions to maximize impact.

Reporting to the President, the Program Officer will serve as a trusted community partner, developing a deep understanding of the region’s philanthropic landscape and working closely with grantees, civic leaders, and fellow funders to drive meaningful change. This individual will thrive in complexity, connect ideas and people with clarity and speed, and exhibit the confidence to make tough but necessary decisions.

This is an exciting opportunity to play a pivotal role in helping fulfill the Foundation’s grantmaking strategy—balancing bold vision with disciplined execution.

RESPONSIBILITIES

A Hall Family Foundation Program Officer is responsible for:

  • Advancing the Foundation’s strategic grantmaking with a focus on collaboration, innovation, and measurable impact.
  • Making strategic decisions on funding allocations, aligning investments with the Foundation’s long-term vision.
  • Setting clear expectations for success—establishing goals, outcomes, and metrics to ensure accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Serving as a keen observer of the landscape—tracking emerging needs, innovative models, and potential partners that align with the Foundation’s mission.
  • Conducting deep assessments of organizations—not just their financials, but how they think, operate, and adapt over time.
  • Proactively identifying challenges and opportunities within the community and proposing solutions that move the needle.
  • Engaging with grantees beyond funding—partnering with organizations to strengthen their capacity and drive systemic change.
  • Synthesizing complex information quickly and delivering concise, well-reasoned recommendations for funding.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with community leaders, nonprofits, and funders.
  • Representing the Foundation in philanthropic, civic, and nonprofit forums, ensuring we are both learners and leaders in the field.
  • Staying ahead of emerging trends and best practices—bringing forward insights that elevate the Foundation’s thinking and expand the boundaries of what is possible.
  • Thriving in ambiguity and complexity, balancing multiple demands, shifting priorities, and dynamic environments with ease.

WHO YOU ARE

The ideal candidate is a bold thinker, disciplined executor, and tenacious problem solver who embodies the Foundation’s core values: selfless, humble, curious, tenacious, and flexible.

You are someone who:

  • Sees the bigger picture and connects the dots quickly. You move seamlessly between vision and execution, recognizing patterns and opportunities others might miss.
  • Has an analytical mindset, always seeking to understand how organizations work—what drives their impact, what gaps exist, and where potential for growth lies.
  • Leads with conviction and makes tough decisions with confidence. You are unafraid to challenge the status quo and prioritize impact over popularity.
  • Is relentless in the pursuit of excellence. Mediocrity is not in your vocabulary. You hold yourself and others to the highest standards, always seeking to improve.
  • Embraces complexity and thrives in fast-moving environments. You remain clear-headed and strategic, even when navigating uncertainty.
  • Builds trust through humility and integrity. You are deeply committed to community partnerships, leading with respect, empathy, and a service-oriented mindset.
  • Brings deep knowledge of Kansas City’s philanthropic, nonprofit, and civic landscape. You understand the ecosystem and can leverage relationships to drive impact.
  • Has a bias for action. You move from insight to execution quickly, ensuring that strategy leads to real-world outcomes.

This role is for someone who is energized by making an impact, thrives in a high-performance environment, and is motivated by the challenge of turning vision into reality.

If that sounds like you, we would love to hear from you.
