What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Graphic Designer position at Hale Tori?
Role: Senior Graphic Designer, Hale Tori
Brands: Tori Richard, Kahala, Birdwell
Reports to: Art Director, Hale Tori
Location: In office Honolulu, HI or San Clemente, CA
Employment Type: Full-Time
The Opportunity
Do you want to be a part of one of the world’s leading heritage resort and lifestyle apparel groups? Hale Tori, home to iconic brands including Tori Richard, Kahala, and Birdwell, is hiring a Graphic Designer to produce the work that brings all three brands to life every day. Combined, these brands are leaders in their space with 225 years of heritage.
Founded in 1956, Tori Richard is known for exceptionally crafted, art forward apparel defined by signature prints, lightweight technical fabrics, and a deep connection to Honolulu’s history of art, travel, leisure, and community. Kahala brings a timeless approach to aloha wear rooted in authenticity and tradition, while Birdwell represents the spirit of the ocean through durable, purpose built surfwear with a legacy that spans generations. Together, these brands share a commitment to quality, craftsmanship, and meaningful design.
As Graphic Designer, you will take direction from the Art Director and execute world class graphic design against the concept, across digital advertising, email, ecommerce and web, social, print, and retail. This is a craft role. The concept and the direction come to you; what you own is whether the finished work lives up to them. We are looking for a designer who cares about typography, spacing, color, and file quality, who can carry a campaign look across twenty deliverables without losing it, and who makes the work better in the details rather than reinventing the brief.
You will execute within the guidelines and design systems the Art Director sets for each brand, so that Tori Richard, Kahala, and Birdwell each hold their own distinction. The volume is real and the calendar moves, so you will need to be organized, fast, and accurate, and to know the difference between a deliverable that is finished and one that is merely done.
You will join a small, passionate, in-house creative team that values craft, clarity, and collaboration. This is a strong seat for a designer building toward art direction. You will be close to campaign development, on set, and in the room where the aesthetic gets set, working for an Art Director invested in raising your craft.
Primary Responsibilities
Design Execution Across Channels
- Design and produce assets across digital advertising, email, ecommerce and web, organic and paid social, print, and retail
- Build email campaigns end to end, from layout through build and final quality check in the email platform
- Design site assets including homepage modules, collection pages, product detail page content, and seasonal landing pages
- Design print work including lookbooks, catalogs, line sheets, direct mail, packaging, hangtags, and labels
- Design retail and in store materials including signage, point of sale, window and fixture graphics, and trade show assets
- Adapt and version campaign creative across sizes, formats, and aspect ratios so every placement looks intentional rather than cropped
Craft and Production Quality
- Prepare production ready files for digital and print, including prepress setup, color management, bleeds, and vendor specifications
- Retouch and prepare photography to brand standard, including cleanup, color correction, and silhouette work
- Hold a high standard for typography, layout, hierarchy, and spacing on every deliverable, at every size
- Keep working files organized, correctly named, and correctly archived so anyone on the team can pick the work up
- Proof carefully and own accuracy on copy, pricing, product names, legal marks, and vendor specifications
Working Within the Brand Systems
- Execute within each brand’s guidelines and design systems so Tori Richard, Kahala, and Birdwell each stay distinct and consistent
- Build and extend templates and component libraries under the Art Director’s direction so recurring work gets faster without getting duller
- Raise a flag when a template or system is no longer serving the work, and propose the fix
- Keep the asset library, image archive, and brand file structure current and genuinely usable
Campaign and Shoot Support
- Take direction from the Art Director and execute against the concept at a world class standard, carrying work from first round through revisions to release
- Interpret the brief rather than assemble it, bringing craft, judgment, and problem solving so the finished piece is better than it looked on paper
- Support photo and video shoots through reference gathering, shot list tracking against deliverables, and on set production support
- Manage selects, retouching notes, and final asset preparation following each shoot
- Contribute in concepting and critique; a point of view is welcome even though the direction is set by the Art Director
Collaboration and Workflow
- Work with the Art Director, brand marketing leads, and ecommerce to deliver against the campaign and launch calendar
- Manage multiple concurrent projects across three brands, and communicate early when timing or scope is at risk
- Partner with printers and outside vendors on specifications, proofs, and approvals
- Take feedback well, iterate quickly, and know when the work is finished
Qualifications
- Three to five years of in house or agency graphic design experience, preferably with fashion, apparel, or lifestyle brands
- A portfolio that shows clean execution across digital, print, and retail, and the ability to hold a look across a full campaign rather than a single hero image
- Excellent typography, layout, and color craft, with meticulous attention to detail
- Expert proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign
- Working knowledge of print production and prepress, including file setup, color management, and vendor specifications
- Strong photo retouching and image preparation skills
- Experience designing and building email campaigns, and familiarity with ecommerce platforms such as Shopify
- Motion and video editing ability, such as After Effects or Premiere, is a plus
- Proven ability to take direction, execute someone else’s concept faithfully and excellently, absorb feedback without friction, and deliver volume on deadline without dropping quality
- Genuine curiosity about design, photography, and culture, and real interest in where these brands sit in the market
- Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience
- Able to report for work during office hours five days a week in Honolulu, Hawaii or San Clemente, California
Compensation
- The expected base salary range for this role is $70,000 to $85,000 per year. Final compensation will reflect experience, portfolio, and work location, and the role is eligible for Hale Tori’s benefits package.
