Working Foreman — EV Charging & Battery Storage (Civil)

Hal Hays Construction is a self-perform general engineering contractor. Thirty years, 1,450 projects, over $1 billion delivered, 289 pieces of iron in the fleet.

We're the GC on EV charging, battery storage, and renewable energy sites. We self-perform all the civil — trenching, backfill, foundations, flatwork, paving — and on a lot of these jobs we self-perform the electrical too.

We're hiring a working foreman to run these sites. Position may oversee one or more jobs/areas at a time.

The job

You're the man on the ground and the man in charge. There's no super above you out there. You run the site, and you run a machine while you're doing it.

• Schedule the job and hold it
• Run every sub on the ground — electrical, striping, fence, signage, landscape
• Client reps, utility inspectors, AHJ — they meet you at the gate
• Permits, inspections, traffic control, SWPPP, deliveries, site security
• Safety. JHAs, tailgates, and a crew that goes home the way it showed up.
• Daily production, quantities, cost codes, photos, documentation
• Punch and closeout. You don't demob until it's done.

The work

• Trenching, shoring, bedding, backfill, compaction — conduit and duct bank
• Concrete foundations — equipment pads, transformer pads, charger pedestals, bollards
• ADA concrete — ramps, truncated domes, path of travel, accessible stalls
• Asphalt paving, trench restoration, patchback, ADA asphalt
• Underground electrical on self-perform jobs — conduit, sweeps, boxes, vaults, stub-ups

What you need

• 5 years running civil work, with real time as the guy responsible for a site — not just a crew
• You can run the iron. Excavator, skid steer, backhoe, roller. Not "I used to."
• Plans, grades, GPS and laser. Trimble/Topcon, or willing to learn ours.
• You've held a schedule with subs on it and made it stick
• You've faced an inspector and gotten a passing sign-off without rework
• Trench safety competent person. OSHA 30 preferred.
• Clean license, clean record. Background check and drug screen — most of these sites require badging.
• 100% travel. Read that again.
• Required to pass pre-employment drug test/background check (This role is subject to federal testing requirements, which requires testing for cannabis despite state law). most of these sites require badging.
• Candidates must pass a post-offer physical examination to ensure they can perform the essential physical functions of the job

Helps

• EV charging, BESS, solar, substation, or utility site work
• Electrical scope experience — even just supervising it
• Bilingual English/Spanish
• Grading and paving background

What we offer

• $80,000 – $95,000, based on what you actually bring

Physical Demands - A qualified individual must be able to perform these essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation:

• Sitting and/or standing/walking for long periods on uneven ground
• Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds regularly and up to 75 pounds occasionally

• Use hands to handle tools and heavy equipment, and reach with arms.

Work Environment

• This role is outdoors on active construction sites. The employee could be exposed to weather conditions such as heat, cold, and rain, and will work near heavy machinery and moving vehicles
• The noise level on site is often loud, and the environment may involve dust and fumes. Appropriate PPE (hard hat, safety vest, hearing protection, etc.) is required at all times.
• Work may occasionally be at heights or in confined spaces
• The employee is required to follow all safety policies and procedures and to actively participate in safety trainings and meetings. This position is classified as safety-sensitive
• Must be willing to work overtime or weekends when project deadlines require
