Position Summary:

The Director of Construction provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for all construction activities—including new home builds, rehabs, and owner-occupied repairs. This role focuses on managing an efficient, high-performing construction operation that aligns with HFHP’s mission and production goals. 

The Director leads the construction teams, which include field managers, carpenters, construction staff, and warehouse coordinator, ensuring safety, quality, cost-effectiveness, and efficiency across all streams of construction. This position is responsible for directing and managing the construction “company,” including warehouse operations, staff, fleet, and equipment; supporting program budgets; mitigating risk: and driving innovation to scale impact while leveraging HFHP’s unique resources such as volunteer labor and donated materials.  

Key Responsibility: Construction Operations Leadership 

  • Direct all HFHP construction activities on new home builds, rehabs, repair projects, and warranty work when HFHP’s self-performs construction.  

  • Determine and implement systems and processes to improve scheduling, resource allocation, and workflow. 

  • Oversee warehouse operations, fleet vehicles, tools, and equipment to maximize efficiency and minimize downtime. 

  • Long range scheduling for construction team allocating staff among HFHP’s various programs and projects in collaboration with other program directors.  

  • Develop construction standards and specs for standardization and quality control.  

  • Determine needed trainings for staff to enhance construction skills.  

Key Responsibility:  Strategic Planning & Program Development 

  • Support the development and management of departmental budgets for construction and repair programs; contribute to organizational budgeting and forecasting. 

  • Collaborate with leadership to set annual production goals aligned with HFHP’s mission and capacity. 

  • Collaborative planning with peer directors - Repair and Real Estate Development – to ensure program goals are reasonable and met. Identify strategic opportunities to increase construction capacity and operationalize goals across the construction team.  

  • Promote innovation and best practices in construction methods, volunteer engagement, and resource utilization. 

  • Negotiate agreements with high-volume contractors and strategic partners to ensure cost-effectiveness, quality, and timely delivery.  

  • Lead procurement negotiations for materials and supplies to secure favorable pricing and terms while maintaining quality standards.  

Key Responsibility: Safety & Compliance 

  • Direct and manage HFHP’s construction safety strategy; ensure compliance with OSHA standards and internal safety policies in support of HFHP’s lead safety director. 

  • Co-chair the Safety Committee and facilitate safety training for construction staff.  

  • Represent the construction team on Enterprise Risk Mitigation committee.  

  • Identify, minimize and mitigate construction-related risk for the construction “company” and the organization.  

  • Work with legal support for annual review of HFHP’s standard subcontractor contracts, requirements, and compliance.  

Key Responsibility: Team Leadership & Development 

  • Lead and manage construction staff (this does not include project managers for new development and repairs): managers, field staff, and warehouse coordinator; ensure adequate resources, training, and support. 

  • Foster a culture of accountability, diversity, and professional development. 

  • Provide clear communication on goals and expectations; coach managers on effective team leadership and performance management. 

  • Engage with peer directors to build collaboration and foster team decision-making.  

Qualifications:

 REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION: 

  • 10 years of experience in residential construction and project management; field experience preferred. 

  • Minimum 8 years in leadership roles in construction management with proven success managing complex projects and teams. 

  • Experience in running a small construction business is preferred. 

  • Strong background in budgeting, scheduling, and contract negotiation. 

  • Familiarity with project management tools and construction technology. 

  • Exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills; ability to work with diverse populations and volunteers. 

  • Strong planning, organizational, and problem-solving abilities. 

  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines. 

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and project management software 

  • Understanding of HFHP’s mission and commitment to advancing affordable housing. 

Physical Requirements to Perform Duties: 

  • Ability to visit and traverse active construction sites, including walking on uneven surfaces, climbing ladders, and working in unconditioned spaces.  

  • Ability to sit at a computer for extended periods of time.  

  • Ability to lift and move materials weighing at least 20 pounds.  

  • Valid driver’s license and maintain a clean driving record.

Salary : $103,200 - $105,000
