Position Summary

The ReStore Associate supports the daily operations of a Habitat for Humanity ReStore location by providing outstanding customer service, processing sales transactions, pricing and merchandising donated goods, receiving and processing donations, and maintaining a clean, safe, and organized store environment. This position works under the direction of the ReStore Manager and Assistant Manager, operating across all areas of the store, including the sales floor, cash register, warehouse, receiving area, and loading dock.

The ReStore Associate also assists with training and supervising individual and group volunteers from diverse backgrounds and age groups, ensuring a positive and meaningful experience that supports the store’s operations and Habitat’s mission. This position is available as both a full-time and part-time role.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The following essential functions represent the fundamental job duties of this position. An individual must be able to perform these essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Customer Service & Sales

  • Provide courteous, prompt, and attentive service to customers and donors at all times, identifying and responding sensitively to customer needs.
  • Operate the cash register efficiently and accurately, ensuring correct pricing, proper handling of transactions, and adherence to cash handling and closing procedures.
  • Stay informed about current store promotions, advertisements, and pricing to assist customers effectively.
  • Answer customer and donor questions about Habitat for Humanity’s mission and merchandise pricing.
  • Relay customer concerns regarding merchandise, store conditions, or service to the ReStore Manager or Assistant Manager promptly.
  • Ensure each customer and donor receives outstanding service by providing a courteous and professional interaction.


Merchandising & Pricing

  • Accurately price merchandise for sale, interpreting and applying established pricing procedures.
  • Research prices for new or unique items and provide recommendations to the ReStore Manager or Assistant Manager.
  • Maintain knowledge of existing and new products, including location and pricing.
  • Assist with floor moves, merchandise displays, and visual presentation to maximize sales and create an inviting shopping experience.
  • Determine fair market values of used furniture, building supplies, and other donated items using online research and other sources.


Donation Receiving & Processing

  • Graciously accept drop-off donations from customers and assist with unloading items from vehicles.
  • Provide donation receipts to every donor for adequate tracking and donation data entry.
  • Review donation forms for completeness before donors leave.
  • Assist with unloading merchandise from delivery trucks and transporting donations from the receiving area to the sales floor.
  • Assist customers with loading large sold items into their vehicles.


Store Operations & Safety

  • Work collaboratively with others to maintain store safety, cleanliness, and organization across the sales floor, warehouse, receiving area, and loading dock.
  • Prepare bank deposits in accordance with ReStore procedures.
  • Interpret and follow Habitat for Humanity and ReStore policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to all ReStore safety regulations.
  • Demonstrate commitment to quality improvement and continuous improvement initiatives within the ReStore.
  • Participate actively as a team member in all aspects of store operations.


Volunteer Coordination & Teamwork

  • Coordinate and collaborate with volunteers, donors, staff, and community service participants to create a positive and meaningful experience.
  • Assist with training and supervising individual and group volunteers, providing direction and support as needed.
  • Always demonstrate professionalism by maintaining a positive demeanor, showing courtesy and grace — even in challenging or stressful situations — while upholding the values and reputation of Habitat for Humanity.
  • Carry out directions provided by the VP of ReStore, ReStore Manager, Assistant Manager, Director of ReStore Impact & Operations, and Driver Ambassador.
  • Maintain a favorable working relationship with all other company employees to foster and promote a cooperative and harmonious working climate, which will be conducive to maximum employee morale, productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness.


Requirements

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.


Experience

  • Customer service experience preferred; minimum of one (1) year preferred.
  • Retail cashier experience preferred; minimum of one (1) year preferred.
  • Experience in thrift, resale, or donation-based retail operations a plus.
  • Experience with merchandising and product display a plus.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to interact professionally with customers, donors, volunteers, and staff.
  • Ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds with professionalism and respect.
  • Strong math skills and attention to detail for pricing, cash handling, and deposit preparation.
  • Sales orientation with the ability to assist customers and promote merchandise.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-starter with the ability to work both independently and collaboratively with staff and volunteers.
  • Initiative represented by a sense of urgency, energy, enthusiasm, attention to detail, and follow-through.
  • Ability to adapt to changing situations while maintaining a positive attitude.
  • Basic typing skills, clear and legible handwriting, and basic proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Neat and clean professional appearance.
  • Understanding and appreciation of the mission of Habitat for Humanity.


Licenses & Other Requirements

  • Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
  • Must pass background check and drug screening.
  • Must be available to work Tuesday through Saturday; all ReStore locations are closed on Sundays and Mondays.
  • Flexibility to work overtime and holidays as required based on operational needs.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position with or without reasonable accommodation. This is a physically active retail role requiring continuous standing, walking, and frequent lifting in a store and warehouse environment.

  • Regularly required to stand and walk continuously throughout the workday while performing duties on the sales floor, in the warehouse, receiving area, and at the loading dock.
  • Regularly required to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with customers, donors, volunteers, and staff.
  • Regularly required to detect and interpret information displayed on computer screens, price tags, signage, merchandise labels, and donation forms at close range.
  • Frequently required to safely lift, carry, push, or pull objects weighing up to 75 pounds, including donated furniture, appliances, building materials, and other merchandise.
  • Frequently required to bend, twist, stoop, reach, and kneel when stocking shelves, arranging displays, processing donations, and loading customer vehicles.
  • Frequently required to operate a cash register, computer, and other standard retail equipment.
  • Frequently required to move merchandise using hand trucks, dollies, and carts.
  • Occasionally required to climb ladders for merchandise placement, signage, and store maintenance.


WORK ENVIRONMENT & CONDITIONS

  • Work is performed in a retail store environment, including the sales floor, warehouse, receiving area, and loading dock.
  • Retail and warehouse environments may involve elevated noise levels, dust, varying temperatures, and exposure to donated merchandise of varying condition.
  • Continuous interaction with the public, including customers, donors, and volunteers throughout the workday.
  • Standard schedule is Monday through Saturday; all ReStore locations are closed on Sundays. Part-time schedules vary based on operational needs.
  • Overtime and holiday work may be required based on operational needs.
