Role: Mechanical Reliability Technician
Location: South Bend, Indiana
Shift: 2nd Shift, 2:00 PM – 10:30 PM
A Day in the Life
You arrive to a clean, well-organized maintenance shop—thanks in part to the care you and your team take with housekeeping. Before a wrench turns, you complete lockout/tagout and verify startup and shutdown safety steps. A call comes in over the plant radio: a pump on a blending line is vibrating. You diagnose the issue, inspect the gearbox, adjust alignment, lubricate the assembly, and return the line to service. Later, you review the preventive maintenance calendar with the Master Mechanic to sequence PMs and avoid production downtime. You capture your repair notes, parts purchases, and follow-ups—keeping documentation crisp and complete. Before the shift ends, you coach a newer technician through a chiller check and coordinate with the Maintenance Supervisor on tomorrow’s priorities.
What You’ll Do
- Perform installation, troubleshooting, and repair of mechanical equipment; support new equipment installs within your capabilities.
- Execute preventive and predictive maintenance in coordination with the Master Mechanic or designee to minimize downtime.
- Service plant systems: mechanical, HVAC, plumbing, and general facility utilities with limited supervision.
- Inspect systems to diagnose issues, prevent failures, and improve reliability; clean, lubricate, and adjust mechanical parts.
- Maintain the maintenance shop and plant areas to high housekeeping standards.
- Follow OSHA requirements; rigorously apply LOTO and safe startup/shutdown procedures.
- Operate forklifts/highboy lifts safely; train on all lifts used on site.
- Document repairs, purchases, and maintenance activities accurately.
- Collaborate with peers, Master Mechanics, and the Facility Engineer; consult with the Maintenance Supervisor on solutions and alternatives.
- Mentor maintenance technicians and helpers; model team-first behaviors.
- Work largely independently with work subject to inspection and checks; adapt quickly to changing “customer” (production) priorities.
- Communicate clearly, including professional radio etiquette.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- 5 years of industrial mechanical training and experience.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools and fundamentals across multiple trades for general repairs.
- Demonstrated capability to perform all listed duties both independently and in teams.
- Strong math, reading, communication, and organization skills; basic computer skills (MS Office, internet).
- Hands-on mechanical skill with pumps, gearboxes, and machinery repair; solid knowledge of basic hand tools.
Preferred Qualifications
- Excellent verbal and written communication; strong presentation skills and documentation discipline.
- Experience with CMMS, preventive, and predictive maintenance programs.
- Certification to service refrigeration, chillers, and A/C units.
- Pipefitting and plumbing experience; machining skills.

- Understanding of instrumentation and calibration; ability to prioritize effectively.
