GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Responsible for the custody and control of all evidence, confiscated property, and found property in the possession of the Guilford County Sheriff's Department.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
The Evidence Control Technician is responsible for the preservation and disposition of all evidence, confiscated property, and found property. Preservation includes maintaining all property storage areas: main evidence depository, controlled substances vault, firearms vault, valuables vault, and lower level cage storage areas. Disposition involves issuing evidence disposition forms, executing departmental orders, executing release orders from the District Attorney's Office and executing court orders from Superior and District Court judges. Property is disposed of by returning to the lawful owner, sale at public auction, or destruction.

Essential Duties and Tasks
Graduation from high school or completion of a G.E.D. and one year experience with a law enforcement agency.
Special Requirement
One year experience with a law enforcement agency; administrative skills, including precision records keeping of general statutes, departmental policies and procedures, and court orders pertaining to handling and disposing of all forms of evidence.
Driving Is Essential
Driving is an essential requirement of this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver's license and that the driving record is compatible with the county's driving criteria.
If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County's vehicle use policy.

Duties And Responsibilities
Essential Duties and Tasks
- Researches current and old cases in order to obtain departmental and court orders authorizing disposition of evidence.
- Issue evidence disposition forms to investigating officer requiring his signature and that of the Division Commander in order to dispose of items held in evidence.
- Prepares evidence destruction research exhibits to obtain court orders and physical destruction of evidence for Guilford County Sheriff's Department and other agencies.
- Prepares evidence for court trials and discovery hearings, and acts as liaison with the District Attorney's Office.
- Transports evidence to the State Bureau of Investigations crime laboratory in Raleigh for laboratory analysis, and legal record keeping of items.
- Investigates found property cases to determine lawful ownership of property.
- Prepares public auction lists for Guilford County Sheriff's Department and Piedmont Triad International Airport Police Department, and assists the legal process division in conducting semi-annual public auctions.
