About Griffin Welding
Griffin Welding is an AISC-certified structural steel fabricator (Certified Building Fabricator, Highway Component, Simple Bridge) headquartered in Waterbury, Connecticut. Founded in 2016, the company has grown to more than 30 employees.
Griffin furnishes fabricated steel to state DOT programs in multiple states. Core work is highway and traffic structures and bridge components. Griffin is a furnish-only fabricator; all work is shop fabrication.
Role Overview
Griffin is hiring a dedicated Detailing Checker. This is a checking-only position: the checker does not detail. Every model, shop drawing and bill of material produced by Griffin's detailers passes through this role before it is submitted to the customer or engineer of record for approval.
The checker is the final gate between the drafting department and the customer. The right candidate reads contract documents and specifications completely, catches what others miss, and holds every submittal to the contract requirements. Success is measured by first-submittal approval rates and zero contract-related errors reaching the shop.
Key Responsibilities
Contract document and specification review
- Read and understand the full contract package for every project: contract plans, standard drawings, special provisions, standard specifications, addenda and referenced codes.
- Identify every requirement that affects detailing and fabrication, including material grades, testing and toughness requirements, weld types and procedures, coating systems, tolerances, hardware and submittal requirements.
- Identify conflicts, omissions and ambiguities between plans and specifications, and draft RFIs to resolve them before drawings are submitted.
- Prepare a project requirements checklist from the contract documents for detailers to work from and for checking against.
Checking
- Check every Tekla model, shop drawing, assembly drawing, single-part drawing, bill of material and CNC/DSTV file before release.
- Verify geometry, dimensions, elevations, member sizes, connections, bolt and weld details, and material callouts against the contract plans.
- Verify compliance with the governing specifications, including AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code, AWS D1.1, AASHTO LRFD specifications, AISC standards and the owner's standard specifications.
- Confirm fracture-critical and primary member designations, Charpy (CVN) requirements, galvanizing and painting details, and weld symbols are shown correctly.
- Mark up errors clearly and return drawings to detailers for correction; back-check every correction before release.
Approval and quality
- Sign off on each submittal package before it goes to the customer.
- Review customer and engineer approval comments, confirm they are incorporated correctly, and back-check resubmittals.
- Track recurring errors and work with engineering to improve detailing standards, templates and checklists.
- Coordinate with project management and QC on contract requirements that affect fabrication and inspection.
Required Qualifications
- 15 years of structural steel detailing experience, including 5 years as a dedicated checker.
- Proven experience checking DOT bridge and highway structure shop drawings for approval.
- Thorough working knowledge of AWS D1.5 and D1.1, AASHTO specifications, AISC standards and state DOT standard specifications. Candidates must be able to find, read and apply specification requirements without assistance.
- Demonstrated ability to read and interpret complete contract packages: plans, special provisions, standard drawings, addenda and referenced codes.
- Advanced Tekla Structures knowledge sufficient to review models, drawings, reports and NC output.
- Strong attention to detail and the discipline to check every item, every time.
- Clear written communication for markups, RFIs and comment responses.
- For remote candidates: reliable high-speed internet, a workstation capable of running Tekla, and availability during Eastern Time business hours.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience across multiple state DOT programs and their standard specifications.
- Background in fracture-critical member requirements and DOT shop drawing review procedures.
- Experience in a fabricator's in-house detailing department or as a detailing department lead.
- AWS Certified Welding Inspector (CWI), NISD checker certification, or a degree in engineering technology or civil engineering.
- Experience building checking checklists, detailing standards or training programs.
