Assistant Project Manager – Heavy Highway Construction

Position Summary
The Assistant Project Manager (APM) will support Project Managers and field operations teams in the successful execution of heavy highway and civil construction projects throughout Southwest Georgia. This role assists with project administration, cost tracking, subcontractor coordination, scheduling, change orders, forecasting, billing support, and communication with owners, vendors, and field personnel.
The ideal candidate is organized, detail-oriented, motivated to grow within the heavy civil construction industry, and capable of managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Project Administration & Coordination
- Assist Project Managers with day-to-day project management activities
- Maintain project documentation, logs, contracts, submittals, RFIs, and correspondence
- Coordinate with superintendents, foremen, subcontractors, suppliers, and clients
- Attend project meetings and prepare meeting minutes and follow-up items
- Help ensure compliance with contract documents, specifications, and company procedures
Cost Control & Financial Support
- Assist with project cost tracking and budget monitoring
- Review and code invoices, delivery tickets, and subcontractor pay applications
- Support monthly cost-to-complete forecasting and productivity tracking
- Assist with quantity tracking and pay estimate preparation
- Help monitor labor, equipment, material, and subcontractor costs against budget
Scheduling & Operations Support
- Coordinate material deliveries, subcontractor schedules, and project logistics
- Assist in maintaining project schedules and short-term work plans
- Support field operations by ensuring timely communication of project updates
- Help track production quantities and daily field reporting
Change Orders & Documentation
- Assist in preparing and tracking change orders and extra work documentation
- Maintain organized project records for claims, delays, and contract modifications
- Ensure supporting documentation is collected and uploaded into company systems
Safety & Compliance
- Promote company safety culture and compliance with OSHA and DOT requirements
- Assist with maintaining required permits, inspections, and project compliance records
- Support environmental and quality control documentation as required
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Business, or related field preferred
- 1–3 years of construction experience preferred (internships considered)
- Experience in heavy highway, grading, asphalt, concrete, underground utilities, or DOT work preferred
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously
- Proficient in Microsoft Office, especially Excel
- Experience with construction software such as:
- HCSS HeavyJob
- Trimble Spectrum
- Scheduling software and document management platforms preferred
- Ability to read plans, specifications, and construction drawings preferred
- Valid driver’s license required
Preferred Skills
- Understanding of heavy civil construction operations
- Knowledge of GDOT specifications and unit price contracts
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
- Ability to work effectively with both office and field personnel
- Self-motivated with a willingness to learn and grow into a Project Manager role

- Combination of office and field environments
- Frequent visits to active construction sites
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Occasional extended hours based on project needs
