What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Research Scientist, Advanced Machine Learning position at Greylock Partners?
Summary:
High-growth AI infrastructure investment (with offices in SF and NYC) is looking to expand its research organization. The company powers mission-critical AI workloads for some of the fastest-growing technology companies in the world, supporting customers serving billions of tokens per second.
This role sits at the intersection of frontier ML research and production AI systems. You will pursue open problems related to how models learn, alignment, and architectural efficiency, then collaborate with research engineering and model performance teams to translate promising findings into production.
Our target profile will have exceptional research judgment and a creative instinct for identifying important problems. You should be able to move from theory through implementation to rigorous empirical results, including experiments conducted across multi-node environments and models approaching trillion-parameter scale.
The research agenda will combine foundational work with applied research connected to real customer needs. The team publishes at top venues while maintaining an unusually direct path from research findings to production systems.
Qualifications:
- Research Depth: Master’s, PhD, or equivalent research experience in machine learning, ideally with first-author publications at venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, or ICLR.
- Experimental Rigor: Demonstrated ability to formulate meaningful research questions, design clean experiments, and evaluate results at significant scale.
- Research-to-Production: Experience moving from theoretical ideas through implementation and empirical validation, rather than working exclusively in theoretical research or systems engineering.
- Modern ML Research: Depth across multiple relevant areas such as reinforcement learning, alignment, interpretability, model architecture, training methodology, inference optimization, or model efficiency.
- Problem Selection: Strong judgment about which research questions can meaningfully change how AI systems are trained, served, or built.
- Startup Research: Interest in working within shorter research cycles where a meaningful portion of the research agenda informs product and customer decisions.
- Community Contributions: A track record of open-source contributions, research publications, or broader participation in the ML research community is a plus.
