Site Safety Manager – Heavy Civil & Mission Critical Projects

Location: Project-Based | On-Site Monday–Friday
Employment Type: Full-Time
Company: Gregory Construction

Position Overview

Gregory Construction is seeking an experienced Site Safety Manager to independently lead day-to-day safety operations on an active heavy civil and mission-critical construction project.

This is not an entry-level or junior safety position. We are seeking an established construction safety professional with demonstrated experience leading safety in a management or supervisory capacity and the ability to serve as the primary safety leader for an active project site.

The Site Safety Manager will work directly with Superintendents, Project Managers, Foremen, craft employees, subcontractors, client representatives, and Safety leadership to identify risk, establish appropriate controls, drive accountability, and ensure work is planned and executed safely.

This position will primarily support one assigned project site and requires an on-site presence Monday through Friday. Occasional travel to other Gregory Construction projects within the same region may be required.

Gregory Construction self-performs heavy civil scopes including mass earthwork, grading, excavation, underground wet and dry utilities, duct banks, concrete, and related site development work on large-scale mission-critical and data center projects.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the primary day-to-day safety leader for the assigned project.
  • Lead implementation and execution of the Site-Specific Safety Plan (SSSP) and project safety requirements.
  • Maintain a strong field presence and partner directly with project leadership and craft employees.
  • Conduct jobsite inspections, observations, hazard assessments, and compliance audits.
  • Identify Serious Injury and Fatality (SIF) exposures, evaluate changing field conditions, and implement appropriate controls using the Hierarchy of Controls.
  • Exercise Stop Work Authority when conditions or activities present an unacceptable risk.
  • Lead safety planning for high-risk activities including excavation and trenching, underground utilities, heavy/mobile equipment, lifting and rigging, concrete operations, electrical hazards, confined spaces, and fall protection.
  • Lead and evaluate JHAs/JSAs, pre-task plans, toolbox talks, and field-level risk assessments.
  • Lead or participate in incident and near-miss investigations, including root cause analysis, corrective-action development, and follow-through.
  • Lead new-hire orientations, project-specific safety training, safety meetings, and field coaching.
  • Monitor subcontractor safety performance and address compliance concerns.
  • Coordinate directly with client safety representatives and participate in client inspections, audits, and meetings.
  • Maintain required safety documentation, OSHA records, incident reporting, and project safety files.
  • Monitor leading and lagging EHS metrics and communicate trends, exposures, and corrective actions to project and Safety leadership.
  • Hold employees and subcontractors accountable while maintaining productive working relationships with field operations.

Required Qualifications

Candidates must possess a four-year degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Safety Management, or a closely related field plus a verifiable minimum of five years of experience in a management/supervisory role.

Certifications such as the CHST or ASP, in conjunction with other relevant certifications and professional experience, may be considered in lieu of a four-year degree.

Candidates should also have:

  • Demonstrated construction safety leadership experience on active jobsites.
  • Strong working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 and applicable construction standards.
  • OSHA 500 certification.
  • Experience identifying and managing high-risk construction exposures.
  • Experience leading incident investigations and root cause analyses.
  • Experience developing and following corrective actions through completion.
  • Experience working directly with project leadership, craft employees, subcontractors, and client safety representatives.
  • Strong communication skills with the confidence to address unsafe conditions and hold others accountable.

Heavy civil, underground utility, civil infrastructure, industrial, data center, or mission-critical construction experience is strongly preferred.

Knowledge & Capabilities

Candidates should have working knowledge of:

  • Excavation, trenching, and underground utility exposures.
  • Heavy/mobile equipment and struck-by/caught-between hazards.
  • Concrete operations, formwork, reinforcing steel, and silica.
  • Electrical hazards and temporary power.
  • Lifting, rigging, and material handling.
  • Confined-space operations.
  • Fall protection.
  • JHAs, pre-task planning, and field-level risk assessment.
  • Incident investigation and root cause analysis.
  • OSHA recordkeeping and basic injury/incident classification.
  • Contractor and subcontractor safety management.
  • Leading and lagging EHS metrics.
  • Corrective-action development and follow-through.

Work Environment

This is a field-based, on-site safety leadership position. Candidates should expect to spend the majority of their time in active construction environments rather than working from an office.

The Site Safety Manager is expected to be on the assigned project Monday through Friday and must be comfortable working around excavation, underground utilities, heavy equipment, concrete operations, and changing field conditions.

Occasional regional travel may be required based on project needs.

Candidates seeking an entry-level, junior, primarily administrative, office-based, or remote safety position will not be the best fit for this opportunity.

What Success Looks Like

Successful Site Safety Managers at Gregory Construction are experienced enough to independently lead safety on an active construction site.

They understand the work being performed, recognize serious exposures before incidents occur, and know how to work with operations to establish practical controls. They can earn credibility with field crews while still being willing to stop work, challenge unsafe decisions, and hold employees and subcontractors accountable.

We are looking for someone who can step onto a project and lead—not someone who still needs to be developed into a site safety leadership role.

Compensation & Benefits

Gregory Construction offers a competitive compensation and benefits package, including:

  • Competitive salary based on experience, education, and certifications.
  • Health and dental insurance.
  • 401(k) with company match.
  • Paid Time Off (PTO).
  • Company-supported travel accommodations when eligible.
  • Continued safety training, professional development, and advancement opportunities.
