Summer Camp Student Counselor Job Description

FLSA JOB CLASSIFICATION:
Non-Exempt Position (Hourly), Part-Time, Seasonal (Summer Camp 2026 dates are June 8-26 and July 6-31)
JOB PURPOSE:
The Summer Camp Student Counselor supports the safety, well-being, and positive experience of campers. This role involves assisting Summer Programs Staff with age-appropriate activities, fostering an inclusive environment, and serving as a positive role model. The position requires adaptability, problem-solving skills, and a genuine enthusiasm for creating a memorable camp experience. Student staff members must adhere to all camp policies and prioritize student safety at all times.
Based on program needs, the Summer Programs Director or Director of Auxiliary Operations may assign the Summer Camp Student Counselor to assist Summer Program Staff across a wide variety of Greensboro Day School Summer Programs, including Prowler Adventure, Leader/Counselor in Training, Specialty Camps, S.O.A.R., or Bengal Cub Club.
This is a part-time, seasonal, on-campus position, five days per week, Monday through Friday.
The Summer Camp Student Counselor models the GDS Community Cornerstones of Respect, Kindness, Integrity, and Responsibility.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assists in maintaining the safety and well-being of campers
Supports the supervision of campers during activities, meals, transitions, and free time
Follows all established safety protocols and emergency procedures
Helps foster a positive, inclusive, and enthusiastic camp environment
Encourages camper participation and teamwork in all activities
Serves as a relatable and positive role model in behavior and attitude
Communicates effectively with campers and fellow staff members
Collaborates with lead counselors to ensure smooth daily operations
Reports any behavior or safety incidents to leadership
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Participates in staff meetings and training sessions
Stays informed about and adheres to camp policies and procedures
Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Summer Programs, Director of Auxiliary Operations, and/or Head of School

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Daily work requires being dressed appropriately to work with children (both indoors and outdoors). The Summer Camp Staff member must be able to participate in games, sports, and physical activities including water-based games and activities. The Summer Camp Staff member must be able to maintain attention and a high level of energy or excitement for extended periods of time. The Summer Camp Staff member must be able to spend the majority of the time outdoors and tolerate a variety of weather conditions.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
The Summer Camp Staff member must be able to move quickly and frequently from standing to sitting with ease, lift up to 50 pounds, and sit on small chairs and the floor. All summer camp staff must be able to provide adequate supervision indoors and outdoors, and they must be able to ensure the safety of students during drills and emergencies that may arise from time to time. This position has frequent exposure to loud sounds and high noise levels on a weekly basis.
