Project Engineer
Role Overview
The Project Engineer oversees the technical execution of large-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. This role is accountable for working with engineers responsible for detailed design, integration, commissioning oversight, and successful handoff to operations. This role is expected to solve highly technical or complex problems through critical thinking, innovation, and broad systems-level understanding across multiple engineering disciplines. The position ensures technical excellence, alignment with utility interconnection protocols, and timely project delivery for multiple utility-scale projects. This role will demonstrate the ability and confidence to present technical solutions and constructively influence executive decisions.
This role reports to the Sr. Manager of Project Engineering.
Primary Responsibilities
· Lead and perform engineering aspects of project execution from Owner/IPP side ranging from conceptual design through operational readiness.
· Act as the technical liaison across internal departments and with external partners including utilities, EPCs, and OEMs. Coordinates and leads cross-functional teams to resolve complex risks and technical issues; champions alignment on technical topics between engineering, finance, operations, and commercial teams.
· Manage the implementation of EMS and control architectures, electrical and mechanical design integration, and SCADA systems.
· Evaluate and approve system designs, performance models, interconnection documentation, and vendor submittals.
· Coordinate system commissioning and performance validation in collaboration with EPC, OEM and EMS vendors.
· Support internal processes, templates, and engineering tools to streamline design reviews, reduce variability and allow scalability of execution across multiple projects.
· Support contracts review and technical negotiations related to major equipment procurement and EPC scopes. Understands the impact of technical decisions on project economics, pro forma returns, and customer outcomes; contributes to cost-benefit tradeoffs during design and procurement.
· Capture lessons learned and apply continuous improvement practices to enhance project quality and execution. Performs proactive risk identification, value engineering practices and mitigation planning across the design and construction lifecycle.
· Perform transition of technical aspects from commissioning to operations.
Education & Certifications
· Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or similar from an accredited institution.
· Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.
Professional Experience
· At least 3 years of experience in engineering roles, including a minimum of 1 years focused on utility scale BESS projects in Texas.
· Demonstrated experience in engineering functions in renewable infrastructure projects.
· Strong foundation in power systems, controls, SCADA and EMS.
· Familiarity with ERCOT interconnection protocols and metering requirements.
· Experience with engineering tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP or equivalent.
· Proven capability to interpret and validate detailed engineering documentation.
Desirable Skills
· Knowledge of utility interconnection agreements and commissioning procedures.
· Familiarity with software-based control logic and integration of automation systems.
· Effective communication and coordination across multi-disciplinary teams.
