Custodian - 2026-2027

TITLE:      Custodian 

PRIMARY FUNCTION:

Performs semi-skilled work in cleaning/sanitizing an assigned area of a school building by following prescribed cleaning frequencies

QUALIFICATIONS:

1. Education equivalent to graduation from an accredited high school or General Education Certificate (GED).
2. Must have the ability to follow oral and written directions.
3. Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers, supervisor, administrators, and school-community members.
4. Alternative qualifications as the Superintendent and School Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Cleans and refinishes hard and soft floor surfaces, moves furniture, and maintains the immediate perimeter of school grounds.
2. Works under limited supervision by following a frequency of task assignment, using prescribed chemicals and machinery.
3. This position is designated as "Essential Personnel", requiring that employees report to work during emergency situations, snow and ice removal. 
4. Adheres to safety procedures and proper workplace ergonomics.
5. Removes trash and recyclables, sweeps, dust mops, vacuums, sanitizes restrooms, cleans glass, cleans horizontal and vertical surfaces, restocks paper and soap dispensers.
6. Is responsible for the proper care and storage of all cleaning equipment and cleaning materials.
7. Responds to a variety of requests from school administrators and staff to include minor maintenance, moving furniture, unloading and storing deliveries, setting up for functions and student activities.
8. Follows Blood-Borne Pathogen procedures, responds to accidents or potential safety hazards which may require contact with chemical spills, blood, or other bodily fluids.
9. Uses various pieces of power equipment to include scrubbers, rotary machines, pressure washers, drills, carpet extractors, vacuums, and specialty equipment.
10. Opens and/or secures building; minimizes the risk of property damage and potential liability to the organization.
11. Maintains building perimeter by sweeping walkways, mowing grass, removing weeds trimming shrubbery, and shoveling snow.
12. Performs other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS:

Duties performed typically in schools throughout the division. Frequent walking, standing, lifting, up to approximately 50 pounds, and occasional lifting of equipment weighing up to approximately 75 pounds may be required. Work is typically performed walking or standing. The environment also exposes the employee to potentially hazardous substances. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, noise and hazards.

EVALUATION:

Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of personnel.

TERMS OF CONTRACT:

12 Month – 250 Days – 8 hours per day

Salary : $33,134 - $44,941
