The First-Class Steam Engineer is responsible for the safe, reliable, and compliant operation of the oat mill’s high‑pressure steam systems and related infrastructure. This role supports steam‑dependent oat processing operations including stabilization, flaking, and heat treatment while also assisting with the maintenance and upkeep of building systems critical to safe, continuous production.
This position ensures compliance with Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry boiler regulations, food‑grade operating standards, and facility safety requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Boiler & High‑Steam Operations
- Operate, monitor, and maintain high‑pressure boilers supporting oat stabilization, steaming, and flaking processes.
- Regulate steam pressure, temperature, and flow to meet production and food‑safety requirements.
- Support steam systems
- Maintenance & Mechanical Support
- Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on:
- Boilers and burners
- Feedwater, deaerator, and condensate return systems
- Steam valves, traps, piping, and pressure‑retaining components
- Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and control issues affecting steam and plant operations.
- Building & Facility Maintenance Support
- Assist with general facility and building maintenance, including:
- Mechanical rooms, boiler rooms, and utility areas
- Steam lines, heating systems, and plant infrastructure
- Coordination of minor repairs related to buildings, piping, supports, and safety equipment
- Identify and report facility repair needs to maintenance leadership.
- Support contractors and internal maintenance teams during building or equipment repairs tied to steam or utilities.
- Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with:
- Minnesota State Boiler Codes
- OSHA regulations
- Facility food‑safety and sanitation programs (GMPs, HACCP support)
- Maintain accurate boiler logs, inspection records, and maintenance documentation.
- Participate in state inspections, safety audits, and emergency response activities.
- Lead or assist with emergency steam system shutdowns when required.
- Collaboration & Production Support
- Work closely with the Head Miller, maintenance staff, and production teams to align steam output with milling demand.
- Support production startups, shutdowns, and changeovers involving steam systems.
- Assist in training operators on steam safety, equipment awareness, and emergency procedures.
- Serve as a technical resource during regulatory inspections and plant visits.

Qualifications
- Valid First-Class Boiler Engineer License issued by the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry.
- 2 years of experience operating high‑pressure boilers or industrial steam systems; food or grain processing experience preferred.
- Working knowledge of building mechanical systems, utilities, and facility maintenance support.
- Strong understanding of steam systems, water treatment, and boiler controls.
- Ability to read P&IDs, mechanical drawings, schematics, and operating manuals.
- Strong troubleshooting skills and high attention to safety and detail.
Work Environment
- Ability to stand, walk, and lift up to 50 lbs as needed.
- Exposure to industrial equipment, noise, dust, and temperature variations may occur.
- Use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required when on the production floor.
- The position may require extended periods of walking, standing, and navigating the facility.
- Occasional extended hours, weekends, or on-call availability may be necessary to support plant operations and workforce needs.
